Wedding Rings

Green Enamel Inside Wedding Ring

I can pretty much guarantee that at some point on your wedding day, someone is going to ask to see your wedding ring (because I'm usually there when they ask!). This is true for both the bride and the groom. I used to think it was so gauche- like they were sizing up the rock or something. But now I understand that it's really more about how people make their rings unique and personal. I know I love seeing everyone's wedding rings because I just love design!! It's one of those little things that you can really customize to represent who you are and what you love- like a little symbolic gift that you get to enjoy every day. I don't always get a chance to photograph the wedding rings off the couple's hand (especially when couples are having such a great time partying), but when I do get the chance, I try to pair rings up with things that really represent the uniqueness of the wedding. So, here are some of my favorite ring shots so far and if you're just dying to see tons of cool wedding rings, or if you need jewelry design inspiration, definitely check out http://www.rocktographers.com which is an entire blog dedicated to wedding ring awesomeness. Seeing some of the unique rings out there totally makes me want to redesign mine for my next anniversary!!

Those photos are amazing. I especially love the one with the duckies - the afro duck looks like Mr. Meatball!

Wow! I love how you capture the uniqueness of the wedding. I know I want a special shot of our rings that day. I wonder what we could use for the setting…

Thanks for the mention Anne. You are such an inspiration to so many of us photographers. The ring shot is a great chance for us to express a little more of our artistic vision- so much fun!

Miss Meatball - no way!! He must be HOT! ;-) (I think guys with afros and glasses are hot.) The ducky couple were chemists and they had all sorts of fun little chemistry things around the room - the ducks were definitely the most unique!

Austin - that has absolutely happened before!!! Only problem is, both rings aren’t always in the same place at the same time before the ceremony… but when they are, I don’t always get the most unique details to work with (like being in a hotel room.) I tend to draw more inspiration from the things at the reception, unless there are a LOT of details to shoot while people are getting ready. That’s just me though!

Michelle - I’m sure if you tell your photographer that you want a really awesome ring shot, they’ll make it happen with something really cool!

Mark, Seshu, Jess, Zoe, Kate - Thank YOU!!!

Do you have any tips for those of us who try to get a good ring shot at home with our point and shoot?

Lillindy - what a beautifully unique name! GREAT question!! For a rockin ring shot at home with your point & shoot, first you have to start with great light. Natural light is generally the best light, so get yourself near a window or take it outside. Find something colorful or crazy for your background- it will be easier to take a great ring shot when it’s off your hand. Set your point & shoot camera to MACRO mode - which is usually depicted by a flower icon on most point & shoots. Then, get in CLOSE!! If your point & shoot has macro, than you should be able to get the end of your lens within 2-5 inches of your ring. Brace your arms on something steady to avoid any blur and click! You can definitely create an AMAZING ring shot with a point & shoot!! If your camera doesn’t have a macro setting, I suggest zooming in as much as you can from as close as you can. It will become even more important to brace your arms to avoid camera shake when you have the zoom on, but you should still be able to get a great ring shot that way. Go for it girls - have fun with it!! I bet you could rock some of our ideas out of the park!!

it’s glass pebbles in a vase of water. ;-) Not sure if they added anything carbonated to the water to create all those bubbles, but I thought it looked cool- so I used it!

Anne, great post! I agree with everyone else, I love the one with the rocks in water. I’ve tried it before and like Kate said, I’ve never come across a glass that clear to get as great of a shot as you did!

Chris and I have made this a fun little “competition” during each wedding. We ask beforehand who will have the rings and plan to both take turns getting some creative fun shots. The rings then have a post of their own and a friendly voting competition by our blog readers. Chris and I love the challenge, and our couples have begun asking for this, they love it! :)

Anne, It looks great…thats my favorite! We are thinking of using blue glass pebbles in our centerpieces…and if it’s ok I may borrow this idea :) Beautiful work Anne.

I love when photographers go out of their way to capture ring shots that mean something specific to the wedding they were shooting. I was horrible and asked my photog to just duplicate another ring shot I had seen online that I love. Not very original, but I think it’s so gorgeous I don’t even care!
