Jenn & AJ Engagement

December 11th, 2008 @ 1:34 pm by Anne @ Anne Ruthmann Photography

Jenn & AJ were the first couple I photographed when I first moved to Terre Haute in 2006! AJ went to Indiana State University and learned how to fly at the local Sky King airport, and even though neither of them live there now, they made a special trip back to Terre Haute to capture these personal locations in their engagement pictures! It was so fun to get a mini-tour of the places that were so fond to him in college.

When Jenn & AJ told me that we’d be shooting at the airport, I must’ve spent days thinking about the kind of pictures, angles, and different things we could do to incorporate the planes!! Here are just a few of the things we came up with!!

I have to tell you a little story about the picture below…. if you’ve been reading my blog and looking at my pictures for a while now, you know how much I loooove kissing pictures! I always ask couples how they feel about kissing, just in case they don’t feel comfortable with the idea, and Jenn & AJ surprised me by telling me they are saving their kiss for their wedding day!! Talk about WILL POWER!!! I asked them if they were open to making it look like they were going to kiss, without actually kissing and they said, “sure!” I could literally FEEL the sparks in the picture below - it gave me goosebumps!!! It was pure torture for me knowing that they weren’t going to kiss and I can only imagine how much torture it was for them to be THAT CLOSE and still hold back!! Wow. Of course, I was that much more excited to capture their first married kiss!!!

Jenn & AJ, thank you so much for coming back to Terre Haute for your engagement pictures!!

I love the one with the iron fence above them…and the one with her on his back pretending to fly! I have a question…and I’m sure they are important to you as a photographer…but being a budget bride…how important are professional engagement photos or engagement photos altogether. We have so many photos together through out the year so why get engagement photos?

I cannot believe there are couples that make it until their wedding day without kissing! I attacked Mr. Avo the very same night we decided to go steady, LOL.

@Diana: let me preface this by saying: I’m a professional photographer and therefor I have a biased opinion. ;) However, I was also a bride.

As a wife, who really doesn’t have any “professional images” of me and my hubby from BEFORE the wedding, I kinda wish we did have them. We have lots of great point & shoot pictures from our various adventures during our courtship phase, but I do kinda wish we had something “nicer” than what our point & shoot cameras allowed with whoever was walking by and willing to hold the camera for us! I have gained weight since the wedding and I definitely don’t look the way I did when I was engaged. I think that’s probably the biggest reason I wish I had them, to be honest. Some people don’t ever change after getting married, but I did and part of me longs to have some really nice causal images of us during our “everything is rainbows and unicorns” phase. Not that married life isn’t great!! Woo Hoo! But your relationship becomes more about commitment and responsibility versus swooning and lovey dovey make-out sessions.

Because of my personal feelings about this, I encourage my couples to do an engagement session with me before the wedding at no additional charge and I know that quite a few other photographers feel similarly (but not all- so please ask your photog before assuming it’s the case!) Not just because I want to give them what I didn’t have, but because I really do find a value in getting to know couples and their unique chemistry together before the wedding day. It also helps me get a sense of who they are, how they photograph together, what their best angles are, etc. On top of that, it gives the couple an opportunity to see how they look through my eyes so that we can address any self-confidence or altered-self-perception issues they might have- especially if they haven’t been photographed in a while.

From a bride’s perspective, doing an engagement session with your photographer before the wedding day helps you get a sample of how your photographer works and what their process is from start to finish. You’ll get a sense of what they’re like behind the camera as well as how comfortable you are with them taking photos of you. Granted, an engagement session is a very different situation from a wedding day- because there’s generally a lot more one-on-one time and a bit more direction involved, but I know for a fact that the brides who do an engagement session with me before their wedding feel 200% more confident and trusting of me on their wedding day.

Hey Anne,

Thank you so much. I really like your answer and it is true, it would make me more comfortable with my photographer if we did have a little session before the wedding. Esp because we may be asking a family friend who has done some other weddings…but we havent checked them out yet…but hopefully! We still have time…April 2010 is our date! And that is very nice and thoughtful of you to include engagement photos with the wedding photos…it also gives you a chance to feel comfortable with them too! :) Gosh you seem like someone I would want to have as a friend!
