Floral Architects

December 22nd, 2008 @ 10:26 am by Nancy @ Nancy Liu Chin Designs

That’s what I call myself sometimes.  Often I  need to come up with last minute ideas for a wedding, and they are usually non-floral emergencies. The most requested thing happens to pertain to the infamous place card table.   What to do, what to do.

Here are two simple and rather attractive ideas.  The first involves making a wooden tray and filling the tray with rose petals or even organic dried goods.  I love this idea and it’s fairly ingenious.  The other involves making large boards that you can “pin” pre printed cards to.  Both of these ideas are creative, relatively fast to make, and attractive.

The wooden tray requires a few simple supplies like pre-cut wooden strips, a large styrofoam board, wood glue, 3 inch nails, and a spool of ribbon.  I take pre-cut wooden strips and using wood glue, I adhere these boards to the styrofoam board.  You will need 2, 24 x 4 x 3/16″ thick pre cut wooden strips, and 2, 36 x 4 x 3/16″ thick pre cut wooden strips. The styrofoam should be 24 x 36 x 2″ tall.  Once the wood adheres to the styrofoam, hammer nails around the exterior to secure the two pieces together.  Make sure that you tack the nail 1/2″ from the bottom.  Cover the nails with ribbon.  Once the tray is set, place rose petals, mung beans, coffee beans, or even river rocks inside.  Place your place cards on top of these organic materials.  Voila!  It’s perfect.

I cannot recall who did the calligraphy because the bride provided the place cards. However, Anne Millet of Mira Aster does amazing calligraphy for me. I love her. See her website for more information. http://www.miraaster.com
