Patrick Moreau, Toronto Vendor: Cinematographer Website: Still Motion About Me: For far too long, wedding videography has been seen as a medium with debatable value and little artistic merit. I think a wedding film should be fun, quirky, romantic, and really reflect two people and their coming together. It should grab you in the first few seconds, shake you throughout, and leave you with a lingering impression. I am 1/3 of the cinematography team at StillMotion, along with Michael and Konrad. With a background in psychology and no formal training in film + video, I've been completely self taught and look to use my background to add more meaning to our films and the experience of creating them. I hope our art can inspire you like our brides inspire us.
About patrick

With the second round of our Evolution Experience Workshop drawing to a close, I wanted to share some thoughts with all of you. We absolutely love what we do- I am sure you have heard that before, and so that should come as no surprise. From forming relationships with our couples, to being privileged to document such diverse and emotional events, to bringing it all together to create a reflection of who they are and what they mean to each other, to sharing their photo and cinema with them afterwards - the entire experience is very rewarding and deeply meaningful.

In hosting the Evolution Experience here at our studio, our intention was to try and reignite that passion that many have lost for the art they produce, to help them learn the tools and techniques to push themselves further, and above all, how to give their work more life, depth, and meaning. What we didn't prepare ourselves for was how rewarding the entire experience would be for all of us at StillMotion, and for that we want to sincerely thank everybody involved.

We've shared a lot over the past couple weeks- our approach really was ‘all in all out'. There is a fine line between inspiring others, which can add excitement and depth to your work, and having others copy what we do, which provides neither. Here is the question - who really loses in this situation? Of course we send out letters and ask nicely that clips be taken down and that things aren't copied in the future, but these instances really don't hurt us, not nearly as much as a couple receiving something so devoid of meaning and personality.

With that, I would like to share with you two examples of clips that were brought to our attention recently (by inquiring couples nonetheless). By the time you see these there is a good chance they may already be removed, so I will try and update this post when that happens. The first looks surprisingly similar to Darshan and Raina's trailer, which we posted a while back (and is posted again here as a reference).

Here is the link to the clip that looks surprisingly similar (the sound will come on after about 20 seconds). Notice the content, composition, and sequencing of the first 5-6 shots. The bizarre thing is that none of the shots were taken from our blog, they are actually recreated with an almost scary precision.

Darshan + Raina Columbus, OH Wedding Trailer from StillMotion on Vimeo.

The second clip is more than surprisingly similar; it is a YouTube version of Amy + Alex's highlights that was reposted on another videographer's website as their own work. You can view that here. Just click on gallery and it is the 2008 demo.

Thanks for letting me share and I would love to hear your thoughts.

Ah, you guys are so inspiring, it would be hard for anyone to resist getting similar shots. But I agree with asking people to take off those 2 videos. The first one is like using the same movie script, but with different actors. They shouldn’t use the same sequence AND the same song. The second one is straight up taking your work.

Hey CJ,

In the end, it really isn’t about us, it is about the couples. We haven’t asked anybody to remove anything as of now- we just wanted to show the brides out there just how common this sort of thing can be.

The first one is flattering in the sense that they copied you because your version was so good, a little scary though.

The second one is straight up wrong. Claiming to have taken that footage as their own? Wrong and shameful. As an artist myself I don’t know how you could take someone else’s work as your own with a clear heart about it. I imagine that they can’t actually replicate what you did in real life when hired by a couple and the trouble that would then ensue.

wow. Can’t believe why people think it’s ok to make the videos so incredibly similar.

Yikes. The second one is straight-up copyright infringement. The first would be as well in the States. But I don’t know what the IP laws in Canada are like.

Patrick,

That’s unbelievable! As a photo & video guy, I find your work so inspiring that I strive to create a product that is just as excellent for my clients but with my own artistic style.

Although it is inevitable that similar shots will pop out from every wedding vendor, to copy and edit scene for scene is creepy and downright wrong.

Whoof! The second one appears to have been removed and replaced with another video using the same song. No wonder they wanted to steal your work, you guys are on a MUCH higher level than they are. I hope you sent them a nice DMCA takedown.

FYI, I LOVE your videos. I wish we’d have know about Stillmotion and budgeted before our wedding. We would have loved having you in Polebridge with us.

You guys are the best. And even though replication is a form of flattery there is such thing as crossing the line.

Every artist needs inspiration, but from that they should be able to springboard and generate new, creative and fresh content. People that copy are downright lazy and not confident that their talents will produce a creative result.

I too wish I could spring forfor your cinematic prowess for our wedding, but I’ll just keep chipping away at our budget and see how far I get.

It’s one thing to be inspired by someone else’s work, it another thing to completely rip it off!! Although, I think in the end, your prospective clients will value the integrity and originality of your work over the imitators.

Also, as a fan of music, I just want to remind everyone that if you use music on your blog, make sure you get the proper right to do it! Everyone deserves to benefit from their hard work!

I am now inspired to get a cinematographer by your work and will be very very cautious when look at potential vendors…

To say that’s a bummer would be an understatement. I guess imitation is the highest form of flattery?!?

Either way, your editing is fantastic–I’m sure the other videographer wishes he could have also copied that amazing sequence with the seamless transition from the males hugging to the females.
