Stationary vs. Stationery

January 30th, 2009 @ 8:30 am by Mrs. Bee @ Weddingbee PRO

sta⋅tion⋅ar⋅y –adjective
1.    standing still; not moving.

sta⋅tion⋅er⋅y –noun
1.    writing paper.

(via dictionary.com)

I regularly get emails from stationery vendors and pr firms that represent stationery companies, where the word “stationery” is misspelled.  When I click over to their website, I usually find that it’s also misspelled there too.  Even though I feel bad, I always let them know because I figure I’d want to know if I were them?

If you’ve been spelling it wrong all this time, don’t feel bad… I did too before Weddingbee! :)

This is one of the things I notice a lot, but I never have the heart to call anyone out on it. Thanks for posting!

Whoa! I had no idea! Good Job for calling them on it, that is hilarious!

This is one of my pet peeves! I’m glad you posted on it. My other pet peeve is the gratuitous misuse of the phrase “__ and I,” when the writer clearly means “__ and me.” Grr. (I just realized I sound like my English teacher from middle school.)

And there’s the use of “they’re”, “their”, and “there”… or “your” and “you’re”…

I’m soooo with ya on this! HUGE pet peeve!

This is one of my big pet peeves, too! And so many of my friends (who should know better because they’re all pretty smart chicks) write “your” instead of “you’re” in email ALL the time.
@Miss Hot Cocoa - so glad to hear someone else knows the difference! People always argue with me when I try to correct them on the “and I” vs. “and me” mistake. Ugh! So now I pretty much keep my mouth shut and cringe when I hear/see it!

I’d rather know, too!

I found a videographer who misspelled ceremony. Evidently, it’s now spelled “ceramony” now. Stationery is a more common mistake, and spell-check wouldn’t pick up “stationary” because it is still a word. However, I am leary about using a videographer who couldn’t use spell-check to catch “ceremony”.
