Bangs Are STILL the New Black!

February 27th, 2009 @ 1:28 pm by Laura Nadeau @ Lo and Co

I wrote this over a year ago, but it still holds true!

I remember spending a year growing out my bangs out in 1998 to have the sleek one length hair do. Times have changed and I have chopped my locks to sport the bang look and I have never been happier!

I love bangs because they can create a great frame to your bone structure and highlight your best assets. If you have fab cheek bones, cutting bangs at that level will draw the eye to them. If you have gorgeous eyes, a shorter bang can add emphasis.

Bangs can also camouflage a less desirable characteristic. If you have a long face, like me (think Sarah Jessica Parker) bangs help to shorten and add balance to your face. Bangs can camouflage a high forehead and also add volume to thinner hair.

The bride and the bang can be a wonderful thing. Think side swept bangs that point right to your gorgeous cheekbones. In photos, bangs can add great framing to an updo. When photographed straight on with an updo the danger is that the face can look severe. If you have bangs it will soften up the face.

Buyer Beware

I recommend gradually cutting bangs. DO NOT, I repeat DO NOT go from no bangs to the straight across Heidi Klum look. This can be traumatizing! I just told this to my BFF last week. Start off slowly with bangs hitting below the nose and then work your way up. Also put the scissors down - go to a professional. And always remember hair does grow back, you can always slick them to the side and wear your hair in a ponytail until they grow in.

To achieve the bangs that we love there is usually styling involved. Unless you have stick straight hair you will have to put a little effort into the trendy straight!

That bang pic is my new inspiration. Do you have more?? I’ll be sporting the full fringe at our wedding and I am having a hard time finding inspirational photos.

Looove that pic of Keira Knightly- that’s my dream hair!

Like you, I also love my bangs- we’re in a long term, committed relationship, and I will be rocking them in full force on wedding day! :)

Great post!

I love Kiera’s hair! I wish I can get my hair like that. I am always fighting with my bangs. I can never get it to look as good as the first day I got them!

Ooh, I wish I could look like that photo of Reese Witherspoon on my wedding day! (Well, I wish I could look like her any day…) I do love my eyebrow-length bangs, but any wedding-day tips to keep them from developing a mind of their own and flopping into my eyes? Thanks!

I am a curly-haired bride with bangs…think corkscrews. I have worn bangs nearly my entire life, but it is always a struggle to figure out how to style them because they tend to group together so weirdly. I also have a hard time figuring out what hair should actually be bangs…if they’re cut only in the center, the sides of my forehead stay bare. Have you seen any pics of girls with curly bangs? I’m already married but still very game for hair advice :)

Laura you have me on the fence. I have bangs that just grew out of their “short” phase and they do look good with an updo. But, they irritate me to no end!!

Argh…can you tell me if there are any bangs that will still look good with an updo but don’t get in the way too much? I’ve got stick straight Asian hair, with high cheekbones, longish, oval-round face if that helps at all.

(I only wish I could look like Reese day of!)

I am really on the fence re: cutting bangs. I had bangs last year and absolutely 100% loved them. However, I grew them out and now I am afraid that I will look too “fierce” if I have bangs at the wedding. Hmmm, now I’m thinking about it again. Thanks for the post!

Oh I would love to be able to pull off Reese’s bangs!!! I always had bangs up until I got out of high school, you know the full on bubbly bangs?? Right…..but I would love to pull off the side swept bangs now. I’m just way too low maintenance for them now I think. But I would love to find a style for my wedding…

Oh I missed this post! I really want to have more pronounced bangs (I have longer sideswept bangs now, but want to take it a bit further) but I think I’m scared because it’s hard to visualize what will look good with my face shape. Love the inspiration pics above!

I got married over a year ago.. and till now I was very satisfied with the way I looked and styles I picked. But, recently my hair has changed and I like it more now, with no bangs, and any time I look at our wedding pictures I regret having the bangs :-( It really makes me sad, because there is nothing I can do about it now. We got married in winter - December - which I assume - fits the whole idea of bangs and dark hair. I wish I would have thought it more through. At that moment, while having the INDIE bangs I did not doubt, but my hairdresser fixed it a bit differently than I usually did on the wedding day .. and I did not say anything (why? no idea, I guess I liked it that day) ..and there you go .. any suggestions how to fix this sadness over the spilled milk? Anytime I see brides with no bangs.. I wish I would have done the same..
