Lovely Asian Eyes!

March 3rd, 2009 @ 2:38 pm by Laura Nadeau @ Lo and Co

I have been hearing a lot of frustration and confusion from my Asian brides about how to apply eye makeup. I simply try to define the eye and use colors that complement the skin tone. I don’t approach an Asian eye any differently than I would any Caucasian, Hispanic, African, or Icelandic eye. I don’t believe in “creating” a crease if there isn’t one. I like to accentuate the lash line which will define and pop your eye color. Below is a breakdown of my simple approach for an Asian eye that can be used on any eye. I have a list of specific products below the photos.

1. Brush a sheer shimmer shadow over the entire lid (blended into the eyebrow area) I suggest either an opal or gold shimmer.
2. Apply a thin tight line across the upper lashline. Use a thicker line for a more dramatic eye.
3. Smudge the liner with a eyeshadow brush or smudge brush
4. (Optional) Sweep a medium tone color on the eyeshadow brush and smudge this into the liner and up towards the top of your eyeball. The shape of the shadow should mirror the shape of your eye. Blend, blend and blend with an empty shadow brush or ponytail brush.
5. (Optional) Apply lashes if wanted.
6. Apply mascara to curled lashes.

Done!

Here are some of my recommended products:

Sheer Light Shadows:

M.A.C. - Rice Paper, Shroom,
Bobbi - Champagne, any of the Shimmer Bricks
L’Oreal - Duos in Classic Khaki and Mocha Buff

Liners:

M.A.C. Fluidline in Backtrack or Dipdown
Bobbi - Gel Liner in Black Plum(great for popping brown eyes), Black, Espresso, Granite

Medium Shadows:

M.A.C. - Expensive Pink, Girlie, Shale, Era, Haux
Bobbi - Raisin, Fawn, Stone, Chocolate Shimmer
Almay - Pure blend shadows - Stone, Oatmeal, Lavender

Brushes:

Stilla - #28 double sided brush - a liner and smudge brush - one of my favorite brushes! I also love #30 - double sided eyeshadow and ponytail brush.

Here are examples of this eye on my gorgeous brides. Let me know if this helps you out!

Thank you! I am not Asian, but I have lovely Asian eyes (not sure where they come from, but I am always mistaken for being multiracial - Afrianca-American and Asian). This helps, I am always attempting to create a crease and I end up looking like I have a black eye or something. Thank you! These are great!!

Thank you ! This really helps. My eyes have creases, but I hate when my make up artist put scotch-tape to make my crease balanced. It always make my eyes teary.

Do you have any tips to avoid teary eyes ? My make up artist said that I have sensitive eyes, so scotch tape, fake lashes & eye liner always make my eyes teary.

i tried what you and another reader suggested this past weekend, and I loved the results! i had never thought of smudgin the liner, but it did make the makeup more subtle (which i love) thank you so much! i’m going to check out those brushes this weekend.

Thanks so much! This is really helpful. I actually have one eye with a crease and one eye without…by any chance, do you have any suggestions about how to balance them out? The eyeshadow always looks so much more obvious on the eye with the crease!

This is great! I really like the first eye look. I’m definitely going to try it out. I like how I already have the necessary materials. Haha. (=

Can anyone help me with this question? I have a question about the optional materials. I’m Filipino, so I’m tan but not too tan. I’m kind of worried about the Almay colors [Stone, Lavender, Oatmeal] & that they would look odd on my skin. Should I just go for it? If not, what other colors would you recommend [drug store brands only]?

This is so helpful, and I wish this was available back when I was a teenager. Luckily I didn’t like makeup enough back then to look like an ugly mess everyday. Over the years I have learned to apply makeup through the help of the internet and some beauty blogs. You have given some wonderful tips, and I’ll be trying them out soon. Thanks!

Real Bride - Aisyah! » Weddingbee PRO » The Wedding Blog

[...] I met Aisyah for her makeup trial a few months ago and was so excited to be a part of her wedding because of her fun-loving personality. As a makeup artist, I am a little obsessed with skin tones and bone structure. And, while I love my fair skin, I was a tad envious of her butterscotch exterior and high cheekbones. I believe the secret to taking great photos is to be in the moment, be yourself, and interact with your friends and family. Aisyah has a cheeky attitude, and I love that it shows in her photographs. She knows how to interact with the camera playfully and authentically, yet “pretends” it isn’t there for some nice beauty shots. To get her look check out a previous post I did using Aisyah’s trial photos as an example of how to do a basic eye. [...]

Until this in-depth article I did not realize how difficult it was for Asian women to achieve the glamorous eyes they seek. Your photos show just how skilled you are at helping Asian women put on stunning eye makeup.
