Laura Hooper, Northridge, CA Vendor: Calligraphy Website: Laura Hooper Calligraphy About Me: I've been practicing the art of calligraphy since the age of 12 and nothing gives me more pleasure than waking up each morning knowing I get to do what I do each day. I love having the ability to infuse my own personal style into each of my bride's special day. When I'm not working, I enjoy traveling, hiking, reading and painting; but most of the time I don't consider calligraphy to be work at all!
About Laura @ Laura Hooper Calligraphy

The Jewish wedding contract, or ketubah, is the perfect opportunity to use hand-lettered calligraphy. This ketubah shown here was used for a reform couple who elected to have their wording scripted in my Ella script style. It looks gorgeous in navy blue and perfectly accentuates the beautiful print they ordered. At the bottom there is room for witness signatures and everything. This is a reform ketubah that is written entirely in English. It’s absolutely gorgeous.

Now, if you aren’t Jewish, don’t be sad: we can still do your vows in calligraphy, or even a really nice poem or lyrics to a very special song. It looks amazing when it’s completed.

I LOVE the Ella font! It makes such a traditional ketubah seem fresh and modern, too. What nibs do you use for things like this?

This is really beautiful. Where did the artwork come from? Do you do hebrew calligraphy also?

@rebecca: Thank you! The client provided the artwork and there are variety of sites online where they can be purchased. I am able to write in Hebrew as well.

@lo: We use different pen tips determined by the type of paper I am writing on. Everyone’s hand is different, so a nib that works for me would not necessarily yield the same effect for someone else. I use pointed pen, not felt tip, for all my work.

Laura, do you mind me asking how much a handwritten Ketubah costs? You can PM me. We are currently looking for one, and a hand written one would be so fantastic. Thanks!!
