Shimmer

March 18th, 2009 @ 8:27 am by Laura Nadeau @ Lo and Co

shimmerOkay ladies, I love me some shimmer just like everyone else but we need to have a talk.

Shimmer should be used as a highlight – not an all over powder on your face. If you put it all over your face your are highlighting everything, therefore highlighting nothing. Especially, if you are going to be photographed or are going to be in daylight. Beware, shimmer which you can barely see in your bathroom mirror takes on an entirely new life in sunlight and flash photography. Quite frankly, you will look like a greaseball in photos.

I only put shimmer in three places:

1. On the cheekbone

2. Corner of your eyes

3. Brow bone

Remember, shimmer is best when subtle. It can’t really be seen while looking in a bathroom mirror. It is seen when light bounces off of it like a flash, sunlight, or direct light.

Lo Tip: For extra sexy at night - put shimmer on your collarbones and watch out!

Laura - is this applicable for eyeshadow, as well? Each time I’ve had a makeup trial, they’ve used shimmery shadows all over my eyes, but I was looking at Xmas snapshots of myself, and similar shimmery shadows looked really “blown out” bright with the flash. Should I be using matte shadows when I get married? {By the way, I love your posts. They’re incredibly helpful.}

And is “on the cheekbone” above or below the apples?

As you can see from my WB headshot, I have medium olive skin.

@Miss Cheese: Most shadows on the market at the moment have a little bit of shimmer in them - which is great. Be cautious with the bright, high shimmer, sparkly, ones. When highlighting under your brow choose a shadow that is a shade or two lighter than your natural color. When people use too light of a color - it can look overdone. Don’t obsess too much about snapshots - they can’t compare to pro photography, but I do like to start with a more matte shadow and add shimmer where I want it.

The cheekbone is above your apples. In the video you can see how I start at the top of her cheekbone and place the shimmer. You can feel where your cheekbone is and as your fingers move down into the hollow part of your cheek is the area I refer to as under the cheekbone which is a great place for a light bronzer.

Hey Laura, thanks for the tips! :) What brand of ’shimmer’ do you recommend? I’m diy’ing my make-up and could use suggestions!

@miss_norris: I love Nars Multiple Stick in Orgasm for cheek. For eye I go with a champange or pearl shadow - Shimmer bricks are great for that and mineral shadows drugstore brands work well! xoxo Lo
