Great Foundation Pieces for Any Wardrobe

April 2nd, 2009 @ 3:41 pm by Guest

Most of my friend and stylist Amy Salinger’s clients are professionals in creative industries (like weddings).  I learned so much from her about the importance of basic foundation pieces, so I’ve asked her to share some of her tips!  For more style tips, check out her super helpful how-to videos!

~~~
As a fashion stylist in New York City, I have seen and learned a lot. The most important lesson I have taken with me is that style is individual and exploring your own personality through your look is as important as expressing yourself through words. It is the non-verbal way of showing the world exactly who you are! So, who are you?
I have worked with many men and women across this great country (including the fabulous and lovely Mrs. Bee), and each one of them has something different to say in life and through their personal look.  The one unwavering similarity that everyone does have, is that a look is defined by how you put it all together. You must own the proper foundation pieces in order to create this fabulous look! I have walked into so many closets where everyone has the “fun” pieces that separate them from the crowd, but nothing to pull it all together. So, no matter how you end up defining your personal style, there are a few key pieces that really do bring it all together that most people should own and cherish. Owning these few pieces will definitely change your entire wardrobe.
Every single one of my clients owns longer tank tops. There is no way to work with them without the presence of these fabulous little (and inexpensive!) gems. I suggest owning both the plain ribbed kind as well as ones with lace trim. Buy neutral colors. Banana Republic is the best place to pick these up and they always have them.  These serve as layering items to wear under other garments. They lengthen shorter tops by adding material to your bottom half or cover up “the girls” if you shirt closure is too low. Use the lace tank tops for that extra flare that will not overwhelm your ensemble.
(Banana Republic)
Next up, the white button-down. I am no office girl, but I own a million styles of button-downs and wear them all the time. The key is how you decide to style them and layer them into your look. Pop the collar, roll up the sleeves, layer on a longer blazer and wide waist belt to funk it out. Use a waist length cardigan with pearl button detail to keep it office appropriate. So many possibilities! Just make sure it is darted and fits the contour of your body. Do not swim in your button-down!
(Ann Taylor Loft)
As for your one go-to pair of jeans, make it a boot-cut style. This is going to be flattering for most body types. Boot-cut means that the bottom half of the jeans are just slightly more flared than the width of your thigh. Smaller, higher pockets are also best for most behinds because they create a smaller, high bum. How logical! Choose a darker wash for the most versatile jeans you will ever own!
(Bloomingdales)
The black pencil skirt is a long standing trend that is definitely not going anywhere (thank you Mad Men). It is a great silhouette because it actually accentuates real women’s curves! A higher waisted, fitted style will only accentuate your tiny mid-section (this is the smallest part on your body) and show off that curvy booty. It can certainly go day into evening just by changing your pumps to boots.
(Bloomingdales)
Speaking of pumps, make sure you own those too! Black pumps will get you through any event that requires you to be “put- together” or get through a long night of dancing. Choose a pointy toe style for a vampy look or a round toe pair for a feminine, girlish look.
(zappos)
You now have the tools to start a fantastic wardrobe. Once you own the proper foundation pieces, shopping will be a breeze. You need to get through the cake in order to own the icing!!
Please let me know if you have any questions, and I’ll be happy to answer them! :)
This is a great post! Will there be follow up ones for how to shop and accessorize beyond the basics?
Great post Amy!
I’ve got a question. I’m starting to think about my honeymoon, and what I’ll be packing. I have the habit of overpacking. I would LOVE to be able to take only a small suitcase on our two week honeymoon. We’ll be making several stops, all urban, during the summer (June). We’re heading to Prague, Vienna, Istanbul, Budapest and possibly a spa at the end of it.
How can I achieve my minimal packing goal? Please help!
I just wanted to add that Amy purchased all of these items (except the black pumps, and not these specific ones) for my wardrobe. I really lacked the basics! :)
Hi Amy! Thank you for your helpful suggestions! I love the classic look of a white button down, but I have trouble finding blouses that won’t pull across the chest but still fit everywhere else. Tailoring is expensive, so I was wondering if you had suggestions for other, affordable options. Thanks again!
Ladies, I am happy to help! First off, there is a honeymoon packing post coming up so don’t worry! Great tips so that you don’t pack the kitchen sink:)
As for the button down, choose a silkier fabric so that it has some movement. There are fabulous silk button-downs in every color at NY and Company right now for only $35!!!!
I think this is a great post! What would you recommend as far as button-downs for someone very small up top? Most button downs seem made for chestier ladies and I end up looking boyish.
You just need to search for a more darted version. This style that I have shown here would be great for you because there is such detail through the darts. Also, leave one button open and add the lace tank underneath so there is not such a focus on your chest and the attention is drawn to the lacy detail!
