About Mrs. Bee @ Weddingbee PRO

I mentioned in my typical day post that I’ve been a dog walker for the past two and a half years.  The story of how I became a dog walker is kinda interesting, so I thought I’d share it here!

m139840377.jpg

When I first started Weddingbee, working from home alone was pretty lonely.  Sure I could work in my pajamas and never think about washing my face or brushing my hair.  But there were times when I wouldn’t leave the apartment for days at a time, and I’d never talk to anyone other than my cat Smokey, who never answered back.  At one point I considered waitressing part-time in the evenings or weekends so that I’d be forced to socialize and leave the apartment.  But I quickly put it out of my mind because it was too big of a commitment.

One day out of the blue, I got the brilliant idea to become a dog walker!  We couldn’t get a dog because we had a dog-hating cat, so being a dog walker would enable me to have a vicarious dog. I was so excited that the moment I had this idea, I created a flyer and headed to a copy place to have copies made.  With one laminated flyer and a bunch of paper flyers in tow, I headed to the local dog park.  I secured my laminated flyer with cable ties to the gate of the dog park, and then passed out my flyers to everyone there.  I’m the type of person who never goes up to anyone and introduces herself, so that’s a testament to how much I wanted to be a dog walker.

Weeks went by.  I was beginning to lose hope that I could become a dog walker.  Finally one day I got a call from a gentleman that lived a block and a half away from me.  He saw my flyer at the dog park, and his dog walker had just moved to Paris.  I went over to his apartment the following day where I picked up the keys (what trust!), and met Francis the 14 year old pug.  For the past two and a half years, no matter how busy I am, I absolutely must take a break to walk Francis every single day.  It’s probably the best thing I’ve done to alleviate stress, and some of my best ideas have come about on those walks!

I loved it when I recently found out that Weddingbee PRO Laura Nadeau is a dog walker as well!  It’s brilliant of her — she already has her own dog (a lovable rescued greyhound), lives in a large apartment building with lots of dogs, and most of her gigs are on weekends leaving her time during the week.  Dog walkers of the world unite! :)

When I first started walking Francis, Weddingbee wasn’t really making any money so the $75/week I made dog walking was great.  I used it as my lunch money and it felt like I was contributing, albeit in a very small way, to the household.  I never liked depending on others much, even if it was my husband.

Did you have any alternative revenue streams when you first started your business?  Do you ever get lonely working from home alone?

I always wanted to go back to waitressing at night if we ever needed more cash, but it is indeed a big commitment! It’s really tiring being on your feet for 5 hours at at time, but you do meet some interesting people! I don’t like to think about it, but I made more money an hour as a waitress in college than I do in my career as a videographer. And it’s not like I’m a starving businesswoman at all! But waitressing, especially in a nicer restaurant, is so fun and pays super duper well. Mr. Bee pointed out I’m too old now to get a similar gig, and he’s probably right! Haha. I’d probably be able to only get a gig at Denny’s or something now :)

If my schedule ever calmed down, I’d love to go back to making coffee or doing something totally mindless in order to get out of the house for a few hours. But I probably wouldnt… and should probably go back to the gym instead if I had that much time!

I used ot be a dog walker too! I also taught dance classes! Not that I have ever owned my own business or anything. Mr.D is self employed and I make him go on walks with me though. He does get pretty lonely from work, once he can work in the US I think he’s going to work for a company to help make friends in a new city/country. :)

My mom is retired and BORED so now she has this idea that she wants to be a dog walker. She would probably do it on a volunteer basis, though. I just think it’s so funny, probably because it’s my mom. I think it’s totally great that you do it :) Francis looks like a doll, too.

I’ve been a tutor since I was in college and still tutor students on the side as a part time job. When I first moved to NY it was the best way to support me and the hubs.

I love how in NYC you can see dog walkers in every neighborhood. I’d love to try dog walking one day too!

I don’t have my own business, but I do have a spare job… dogsitting! I just finished a job watching three dogs. It can be a bit of a challenge sometimes, but I love dogs and could always stand having extra money!

I work from home, and I’m totally with you on the loneliness factor. When Mr. Cheese gets home, I’m desperate for in-person engagement right when he’s wanting some “off” time. It’s a struggle.

I sometimes work from a coffee shop — the energetic buzz, no pun intended, helps — but I can’t do conference calls from there because of the background noise, and 80% of my day is conference calls.

I love this idea! I have dogs, but being accountable to someone else makes a difference, I bet. Great idea!

I have to keep a job out side of my business, it helps to have the extra moola but I really do it to make friends, otherwise I would be inside all day. And same thing with my cats they aren’t good conversationalists. I used to waitress and I loved it! Right now I work at Anthropologie 2-3 times a week. This way I meet great people and still am surrounded by übers amount of creativity. The discount is a perk! :)

I’m considering putting flyers out in my neighborhood to be a dog walker. I work from home and would love the chance to get out of the house and make some extra cash. Question - How much should I charge? I’m in a suburb of Philly. I’m not sure what a reasonable rate would be.

@tess: I never asked for a specific rate. He offered me $15 for 15 minutes, which is kinda high I think even for Manhattan.

Maybe $10/30 minutes is fair for a suburb?

@Mrs. Bee: That sound about right. I charge $16 for a 30 minute walk. I only walk 3-5 dogs a day, but I love the extra money and the time outside with the dogs.

Look at Francis’ sweet little face!

Though I’d love to make my business my full time gig, and supplement my income with a part time job - right now, being my business is my extra source of income, as I work a full-time 9 to 5 job. Lots of work - but worth it because I love being a wedding officiant (the day job - well, it pays the bills!).

Wow! This is completely me. I LOVE working out of my home but have found myself really getting lonely. I walk my dog every day to get out, get out of that computer chair, and get some fresh air. And of course my dog loves it :) I communicate 99.9% via email with my clients and therefore can go days without talking to anyone but my husband. What a great post!

I worked for a pet-sitting service when I graduated college for about a year. The hours sucked. I’d have to be at the homes at 6 am and 6 pm in freezing weather and 110 degree heat. We did lots of extras for the families, including cleaning their kitchens and picking up dog poop. I learned how to open *any* tricky locks, and I once saved a cat who had hung herself on her collar accidentally. (Break away collars are essential!)

In Seattle, dog walking is BIG business.

Now I moonlight in an ER for extra cash. Fellowship doesn’t pay anything.
