Now that wedding season is upon us, I’m back to working in the studio coming up with creative ideas. It excites me to no end when I can touch flowers.
In honor of the start of wedding season, I’m also launching a new series; it’s a case study of inspiring pieces that I’m working on, aptly named Inside My Floral Studio. I have to thank my bride, Nicole for inspiring me. For her late summer wedding, she wanted something unusual with elements of natural textures in hues of butter yellow, creams, and soft ivory with lovely droopy flowers and foliage like amaranthus. Though I created this centerpiece for someone else, I have to do a shout out to Nicole for giving me a design challenge that I’m lovin’. It’s clients like her that make me think. Usually in the shower, the inspiration will hit me like it did this morning.

venue: Migis Lodge South Casco, ME
caterer/cake: Migis Lodge
guitarist: Brian Cullen
DJ: DJ Smallchange (Jim Dier), NYC
dress: Priscilla of Boston
honeymoon: Spain
The week of their wedding, Ginna sent me an email with some last minute details and noted that she hoped her wedding wouldn’t be too ho-hum compared to the last few destination weddings I have photographed. Au contraire! Ginna and Allan’s lakeside wedding at Migis Lodge was anything but! J and I had a fantastic time, and the weather couldn’t have been more perfect for the outdoor ceremony (no rain! no bugs!).
If you have not been to Migis Lodge and are looking for a unique wedding venue, you must check it out immediately. It’s 125 acres of beautiful wooded lakeside property dotted with rustic, yet chic, cabins. GM Phil and his wife Amy are so gracious and warm, they’ll make you feel right at home and like long-time friends instantly. The grounds are gorgeous and well kept. And don’t even get me started on their delicious food! It’s just a 45 minute drive from Portland, yet the setting feels like a hard-to-find secluded getaway.
On to the pictures…
The theme of this wedding was obviously the great outdoors. J captured this fantastic exterior shot of Ginna having her hair done inside the cabin, set among the reflection of the trees.

If you haven’t seen Mark Ryden’s work before, it’s really a must see. I could get lost for hours looking at his work. It’s the type of work where you look and every time you look you see something different. I love this description of his work: “Viewers are initially drawn in by the comforting beauty of Ryden’s pop-culture references, then challenged by their circumstances, and finally transported to the artist’s final intent – a world where creatures speak from a place of childlike honesty about the state of mankind and our relationships with ourselves, each other and our past.” Brilliant!
Bee!
The vast majority of people call me by my last name, Kim. I’m used to it, so it generally doesn’t bother me. But even people that know me accidentally call me Kim from time to time. I recently changed my email to read Kim, Bee instead of Bee Kim so that it would be clear Bee is my first name, but I still get called Kim 90% of the time.
I can’t really complain because my name was behind the entire branding concept for Weddingbee, and so far so good!
Do you have a name that people get wrong all the time?

Nothing say’s “I’m extra important” than an invitation lined with a colorful paper. A liner makes everything extra fun. Wouldn’t you agree?
Envelope to liner: “You complete me!”

Darlene + Jerrold were great to photograph! They had a good amount of chemistry, which always helps while we’re shooting. We met up with them at the Disney Concert Hall in Downtown LA. We had shot at this location before, so we were determined to find a new approach. This is basically our mindset every time we walk into a new photo sitting, “How can we make this session unique to this couple?”. I think we found what we were looking for and found an entirely different angle.

I’m thrilled to announce a new series that I’m doing called “Ask Nancy!”. You could say it’s the Dear Abby column with a wedding floral spin. Please keep your questions coming (and remember there are no silly questions!). Leave your questions in the comments, and I’ll be sure to answer them.
We start with a question from a groom, Inviting600 (yes, the couple is inviting 600 guests to their wedding ). Inviting600 asks: “why do some flowers cost so much?” and “what flowers should I avoid if I am trying to save money?”.

The adorable Lauren and Jamey were the second, and final, recipients of a Weddingbee giveaway I did a couple years ago. They were married at the lovely Rockhouse Hotel in Negril, Jamaica.

Dear Lo,
Like every other bride, I want to look “perfect” on the big day and am tempted to hire someone to do my make-up for me, but we are getting married in the middle of nowhere and finding someone to travel there without having a huge budget has been an issue. So I’m thinking I’ll end up doing it myself. Problem is, I rarely wear make-up…I’m just WAY to tired/lazy in the morning to do anything with my face before I head to work besides slather on some Neutrogena Tinted Moisturizer and Clinique High Impact Mascara. So, needless to say, I’m NERVOUS -there are SO many products, and now there are HD formulas added to the mix to create even more confusion for me!! I have no problem investing in quality make-up, but since I have no idea what I’m buying most of the time I end up not liking it and getting discouraged. Ugh. People say my eyes are my best feature, so I want to try and play those up for the big day - but I’ve tried applying fake lashes before and had a terrible time (I’m a blinker when things get too close to my eyes!). I could be hopeless.
~ Chelsey
