Laura Hooper, Northridge, CA Vendor: Calligraphy Website: Laura Hooper Calligraphy About Me: I've been practicing the art of calligraphy since the age of 12 and nothing gives me more pleasure than waking up each morning knowing I get to do what I do each day. I love having the ability to infuse my own personal style into each of my bride's special day. When I'm not working, I enjoy traveling, hiking, reading and painting; but most of the time I don't consider calligraphy to be work at all!
About Laura @ Laura Hooper Calligraphy

Clients and wedding guests sometimes wonder about the difference between escort cards and place cards, but it is very simple. Escort cards send your guests to their correct table, while place cards tell them which seat is theirs at the table. It is important to at least have assigned tables, so there is a smooth transition from your ceremony to your reception, without guests wondering where they should sit or with whom.

These adorable cards with attached table numbers would hang nicely on a cute bulletin board or a tree.

Escort cards can be simple or creative, such as these real sand dollars {above} that hang on a little tree.

Often times for small weddings, escort cards are not needed if your guests are sitting at one long table. It's easier for them to just walk around until they find their names, such as with these sand dollars for a wedding in Hawaii {this is quite common with destination weddings}.

Place cards too can be very meaningful such as the bookmark above {there was one at each seat with the guest's name inscribed across the top edge in Copperplate Script}.

Menus {such as the one above by Nickelson's Invitations} with belly bands are one of my favorite ways to creatively use place cards. Though not all receptions require place cards, sometimes your caterer or the venue requires them. If you are confused about whether you need them, you should consult with your wedding planner or venue coordinator.

Whatever you decide your I'm sure your guests will appreciate the token to take home with them. :-)

Thanks for this post. True to form, I was just about to decide that I wouldn’t bother with escort cards and place cards, but you’ve reminded me that it makes things easier for our peeps.

I am guessing I chose place cards. I did not tell people which tables to sit at, but we had 3 meal choices and to make things easier for the wait staff we color coded the place cards. We had open seating. I had a sign on the table directing guests to find their card and place it at any seat they wanted. We had no problems. So I would have to disagree that assigned tables are important.
