Picnic Wedding

May 15th, 2009 @ 1:06 pm by Wiley Valentine

I am fascinated with this idea of having a picnic wedding. I think it's such a unique idea and perfect for a DIY bride. Imagine a large open field speckled with flowers. Each couple gets a custom monogrammed blanket and a picnic basket filled with chilled wine, cheeses, crackers, rosemary infused marcona almonds, Italian cured meats…

This eco-chic picnic basket is the perfect solution! Filled with goodies from Dean and Deluca, my favorite Cowgirl Creamery (photo via Country Living), and a nice chilled bottle of Rombauer…Yes please!!

Man I love this. It reminds me of some old movie where people would have get together in the park near the lake. And impressionist art like John Singer Sargent’s The Chess Game and Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose. I have a few of these pics saved in my ideas folder. I’m thinking bbq picnic wedding. Might try to make some lemon curd to give away in small jars with short bread cookies. Maybe have strawberry short cakes in little paper red and white checkered boats. I’ll probably have tables as well as blankets on the ground, so the older folks will be more comfortable. Not sure if we’ll keep all the blankets, give them to the wedding party as gifts after or donate them to a shelter. I’ve been buying baskets to use at second hand stores and will use them around the house after. There’s something romantic about the idea of picnics on warm summer days with dapple light filtering through trees and sharing good food and good times with people you love. Also hints to me at fourth of July celebrations on the water front where parks fill with people spreading blankets and food.

I’m actually doing this for my July 25th wedding. :-) We’re using blue and white gingham fabric for napkins and a mix of sage green and natural covered burlap over white linen for table runners. Those that want to can sit on cream colored chinelle blankets I ordered off ebay. I’m still putting it together but I’m really looking forward to seeing how it’s going to turn out.

Everyone that has found out about our picnic plans has been really excited. I just hope we can pull it off!

Love the shot of all the blankets — and they each have a centerpiece! :-)

I love the last pic from Jordan. It’s the inspiration for my end of summer party this year. Can’t wait!

I’m doing a modified picnic… we have a ginormous gazebo that we’re putting tables in (because it will be more comfortable than sitting on the ground), but we’ll have picnic-friendly foods (no on-site heating!) and fresh air and perhaps some frisbee. And kids running around! not sure about checkers (may do black/white gingham) but we’re using cobalt blue thrifted glassware and vases for the centerpieces with garden-y looking flowers and white and beige stoneware serving pieces for the food. I’m pretty excited.

we’re doing this for our rehearsal dinner — anyone have good advice about where to get inexpensive blankets/pillows? we’re having black and white gingham tablecloths with pink, yellow, and orange flowers.

What a beautiful inspiration board. =) We’re having a picnic wedding, but it’ll be a bit different than this.
