David Perry, of David Perry Films, is truly one of the most progressive and influential event filmmakers of our time. His work is stunning and always receives accolades from many people including industry people and brides and grooms.
Some of his recent work caught my attention because of his use of a DSLR camera that is normally considered a still camera. This is a recent development in the video/photo world. Still camera manufacturers began adding video features to their cameras. These cameras bring to video the low light abilities, shallow depth of field and resolution normally only associated with the still image or motion picture film. This new feature has been well received by both event filmmakers and event photographers. The results have been amazing.
David shows some of the best uses of this technology I have ever seen. It helps that he was an amazing filmmaker long before this camera ever came along. Here is a good example of his work along with his description of the couple and the event.
5D Mark II Wedding Teaser from David Perry on Vimeo.
“Hindsight is always 20/20. Rachel contacted us last fall to have us come film her wedding in Medford, Oregon, but decided last minute that the wedding video wouldn’t fit into her budget. Realizing her mistake, the wedding video was put at the top of the list when her brother David was married last December in San Diego, California. I was honored to spend the weekend with her family.
When Rachel saw David’s same day edit showing at the reception, she voiced her regrets for not having a wedding video, and I suggested that we shoot a bridal video with her husband Paul even though it was after the wedding was over. I’ve done this previously for other couples who don’t have a wedding video and even though we cannot capture the exact emotions of the wedding day, it is still a beautiful production that reminds them of their love for each other.
Rachel and Paul were open to any ideas we had, so I was excited to use a new emerging format for wedding films: Digital SLR cameras. Digital SLRs, particularly the Canon 5D Mark II, is nothing short of stunning. Since this is a 35mm camera, it is like shooting on motion picture film and expect to see an explosion in the wedding industry with this format.
I put together a short teaser, but watch for the final production as soon as we get back our 8mm film which was also used in this production.”
Thanks David. Beautiful work!

Wow - this is a really incredibly teaser trailer. And what a sweet story. The bridal session really feels like a portrait in motion, and it’s incredible how well it seems to capture them. So cool - and the DSLR format sounds awesome!
