When I begin to feel a big overwhelmed about all the should and should nots of a wedding, I stop and look at these photos and remember what really matters.

The young couple on the right is my Memere and Pepere on their wedding day in 1940. They have been married for 68 years. Yes! They are still married and living in the home my Pepere built in New Hampshire.
There are so many things about these two photos that I love. I love how Memere is cutting her own cake {with a bit of help from Pepere, who is kind of holding her hand…but still sitting!}. The round, three tiered white cake and little bride and groom figure on top is so wonderful to me. I love how intimate the wedding seems. It looks like it is in a small room, perhaps someone's living room where they all sat in a circle in wood folding chairs {my family has a thing for sitting 'round in one circle during holidays and various celebrations so I do not doubt this scenario}. I love the perfect, elegant curls in Memere's hair, and how huge is her bouquet? Memere is and always was, up to the moment, even ahead of the moment. Pepere's crisp and casual suit is the perfect balance to Memere's flowing white dress and veil.
Can you also believe that you are seeing two brides standing next to one another? Sharing their day with another bride? It is wonderful and serves as a reminder that a wedding, whether it is yours or another's, should be celebrated with everyone! Even the other bride getting married on the other side of the street!
Each time I look at these photos I remember what my fiance Rich and I want for our wedding - casual, with simple touches of beauty, infused with our own style, and surrounded by all the people we love under a New England Sky.

Love the old pics! We are trying to collect a bunch old wedding photos from our families to display at the wedding. I also call my grandparents Memere and Pepere!! Do you have French Canadian heritage?
