Rich and I started receiving seed and bulb catalogs in January. Yes. We get them in the mail each winter and pour over them saying “ooooh pretty!” and “ahhhh we need those!” We have made the decision to grown our own wedding flowers in our backyard garden, as well as Rich's parent's massive backyard in Massachusetts. We need to do some further zone research to see if the flowers we want for our wedding will last until late summer to early fall in my parent's backyard in Maine…which I suspect they will as evident from the above photo which I took in their backyard late last summer. My mom's zinnias were amazing!
As lovers of pretty much every flower on earth, we do have some favorites that we are also successful at growing and they are as follows:
We will be testing all of these flowers this summer and fall in a backyard near you! Then cutting, arranging bouquets, filling the vintage milk glasses vases we are collecting for centerpieces, then snapping photos so we know how to do it again {for real} the following year.
Seemingly eclectic, but all in season and when artfully arranged beautiful and all homegrown!

Gosh this is a pretty tablescape! {via Earth Friendly Weddings} The deep mustards and purples, with the pops of pink and orange are so perfect. Our color palette will likely be dictated by our flowers. If we are able to grow zinnias and chrysanthemums like the ones in these photos I will be quite happy!
We have been collecting our vintage milk glass vases. At first I thought I liked the idea of just one vase with a full, yet casually arranged bouquet in it, but now I really like the idea of have 3 - 4 different, smaller vases filled with just a few stems. It makes a lovely, homey statement. And how about the flatware in the vase? Nothing like backyard eating!
I am ready for picnic. You? ![]()

We just bought a house in MA with a shady backyard that we’re dying to infuse with the vibrant colors of flowers and herbs. Keep us posted on what grows well!
