William Gaff @ Human Story Films's Picture
William Gaff, Washington, DC Vendor: Videography Website: Human Story Films About Me: Welcome to this conversation about wedding films. I am a filmmaker of course, but also a son and a husband and a father. In addition to those things, I consider myself to be a storyteller. However, my love for stories started long before I ever picked up a camera. Through the years I have come to believe that story is really the breath of life. I hope that these blog posts encourage the conversation not only of how great wedding films are made, but also, and maybe more importantly, why they are made.
About William Gaff @ Human Story Films

This week I am thrilled to feature Darrell Aubert of Aubert Films for a behind the scenes look into some this amazing filmmaker's wedding work.

I first saw this clip  a few weeks ago and immediately wanted to feature it on Weddingbee Pro.  I love this clip. Darrell captured many absolutely beautiful moments but the one that moved me the most was the letter exchange sequence about three minutes into the piece. Darrell really shows such a sensitivity to the subtle but powerful emotions of the day.

Darrell is a filmmaker who has the amazing ability to adapt his style to the needs of the film and the couple. I have seen his wedding films go from edgy and fun to honest and intimate.  He is an incredible talent.

I asked him to tell us a little bit about how he approached the making of this film.

Whenever a couple approaches me about documenting their wedding, I always take extra effort in getting to know them. I have them fill out a several page customization sheet that gives me insights into their likes and dislikes. With Mariah and Doug, I found that there were a few themes that were very important. First was the natural beauty of Chestertown, MD when fall is in full swing. The seasonal colors of the trees, grass, and corn fields are some of the best colors to shoot. Some of my favorite shots in the edit are those of the geese, traveling south for the winter, backdropped by an orange sky and a setting sun.

The second theme that I felt was very important to Mariah and Doug were the small things that symbolized their love for one another. One of the most emotional moments of their wedding video is the card exchange before the ceremony. If you watch closely, you’ll notice Mariah’s card is held closed by a metal angel. This “guardian angel” is one of those unique objects that carries a special meaning between two loved ones.

The third theme was the sincerity of the vows and rings that Mariah and Doug exchanged with one another. I know this sounds like something every wedding has in common, but when you watch the video you’ll see what I’m talking about. The part that gave me chills down my back is when Doug says “I honor you” and looks into Mariah’s eyes during the ring exchange. It’s such a subtle yet powerful moment that I think stresses the importance of this third theme.

I hope you enjoy this wedding video as much as I did shooting and editing it!

Aubert Films is based in Philadelphia but available for filming worldwide.

Thanks Darrell for sharing this amazing work.

This video is beautiful. Darrell shot my wedding last month. It was a pleasure to work with him. His style is so noninvasive that it was hours before I realized the he was there. I can’t wait to see our video, I know that it’s going to be great.
