Kristin Brancaleone, Rancho Santa Margarita, CA Vendor: Floral Designer Website: The Treasured Petal About Me: The Treasured Petal is a reflection of my love for scrumptious flowers, yummy textures, colors, ribbons, and all the other girly splurges that being a florist allows me to enjoy on a daily basis. Although I don't discriminate when it comes to flowers, my two favorites would have to be cattleya orchids and gloriosa lilies, which I carried in a ginormous bouquet on my wedding day. When I'm not crafting wedding florals and consulting with brides, I am usually at the dog park with my dogs Pesto and Basil, cooking healthy vegan dinners, watching Seinfeld with my husband Joe, at Bible study, or scouring craigslist for antique furniture to fill up my new house. I am also kind of a home-body and really love sipping tea in my pajamas while working my way down my google reader blog list!

My Favorite Roses

September 2nd, 2009 @ 12:43 pm by Kristin @ The Treasured Petal

I always ask my brides which flowers they love, and which flowers they absolutely don't love. Roses are almost always mentioned. Most brides see their lovable qualities- their gorgeous spiraled petals, the insane variety of colors, shapes, and sizes, their sturdiness in all kinds of weather, and their relative affordability (I can't think of a more bang-for-your-buck flower out there.). But there are some brides who consider roses to be a little “same-old”,”traditional”, or “bleh”. Perhaps they just want to explore the hundreds of other more unique flower possibilities before they settle on the old stand-by. I totally get it.

These are the roses that excite me every time I pick them up from the mart. These are the varieties that have reignited my love for roses and have converted my most anti-rose brides into rose lovers.

1. Polo:

A creamy white rose. Love their cup-like shape and ruffly texture.

2. Pink Intuition:

How funky are these fuchsia zebra striped beauties?

3. Faith:

These lush roses have a color that's hard to define: where lavender meets dusty rose meets silver. They are so much more beautiful in person.

4. Amnesia:

There is something mysterious and a little haunting about these greenish-greyish-purplish roses.

5. Black baccara:

My love for this rose is probably obvious, since I use it whever I can. You can't fully appreciate it until you feel it's velvety soft petals.

6. Abraham Darby garden rose. Scratch that, any garden rose!!!

7. Mimi Eden Spray Rose:

A million tiny petals that burst open in shades of intense pink and cream. Their mini blooms are the size of quarters.

8. Sahara:

Soft beige with a touch of pink on the outside of the petals. Adds a hint of color to neutral white arrangements.

9. Supergreen:

My go-to green rose. While green tea, jade and limbo roses can look a little washed out and yellowish (depending on the bunch), supergreen is reliably a vibrant shade of chartreuse.

10. Circus:

No rose opens as beautifully as this orange and yellow bi-color lovely. It just pops in this bouquet!

There are so many others I could list, I may need to do a part 2. :) With so many rose varieties coming out all the time, there are still many more to discover. Also, R.I.P. to my favorite rose varieties that are no longer available in L.A. (like sterling silver and candy bianca!).

Are you a “rose person?” What are your favorites? Also, if you're a florist, are you mourning the loss of a favorite rose that is no longer being produced? I feel you!

Vendela– the color is like an antique white/ivory and it has a very high petal count.. opens up so beautifully- ahhh, vendela…

Oh Circus so pretty, how would it go with Eggplant dresses? Any other sunset color roses you recommend?

As a rule, I am not a big fan of roses. I do like spray roses though, and we used them in my bouquets. I’ve never seen polo roses before and I like them–remind me of ranunculus.

December

My husband gave me a bouquet of these beautiful dusty-pinkish-almost-peachy, very heavily petaled roses for Valentine’s Day a few years ago, and I have always wondered what type they were… they were absolutely stunning. How can I find out their name?

@mcnetn3: I love vendelas, too! They have such a silky smooth texture. The one thing I don’t like about them is that some bunches I’ve received have a subtle pink tone to them, but some don’t.

@kayakgirl73: I actually did a beautiful wedding with circus roses against eggplant purple table runners. The contrast was amazing- I’ll share soon! Voodoo roses are also gorgeous yellow/orange roses, and open up nice and full. Milva is a fantastic peachy orange rose with amazing tonal gradations.

@December: Could they have been esperance roses? Sierraflowerfinder.com has a huge database of roses you may want to check out. You might find what you’re looking for there!

These remind me why roses are popular. I like the fire & ice ones. They are intensely pink at the edges but fade to white toward the bottom of the petal. It always adds texture to bouquets.

OMG I am in love with the Faith rose!!! Wow. That’s my favorite look.

My florist is using lots of vendela roses.
