DIY Holiday Gifts (Or Favors)

November 12th, 2009 @ 10:49 am by Wiley Valentine

It’s getting to be that time of year again when I start brainstorming about what gifts I will make/give this holiday season. Each year I like to give the ones I love something handmade. I find these are always the best kinds of gifts and the ones people appreciate the most. They are also a lot of fun! This is where I begin - I have put together an inspiration board for myself to start the creative juices flowing. I looked mostly at DIY wedding favors as these can easily double as holiday gifts. I like the fact that many DIY brides are thinking of something personal and meaningful to give as wedding favors - exactly what I want to achieve for my holiday gifts!

Food is high on my list of ideas since both my husband and I love to cook, it definitely brings in that personal touch. My inspiration above came from: 100 layer cake. We love jam; check out their recipe and DIY instructions! Love this especially if you grow your own fruit!; the next images also from the fabulous 100 layer cake are more for visual inspiration although I am loving the coffee and tea bags and those handmade caramel apples! brilliant!

Who better to turn to for DIY inspiration than Martha herself right? The mini cookie jar, cookies + milk, lobster pops and salt water taffy are great and I also love the idea of turning to your local roots for inspiration! These mini cherry pies from the darling Abby at Style Me Pretty are too cute for words! Check out her post for free downloadable tags and DIY instructions. What might be my favorite so far as these brilliant homemade flavored salts and sugars from the genius that is Sunday Suppers. Check out this post for full instructions. LOVE! Lastly a homemade terrarium (photo via Lady Farrah’s etsy shop). I can’t get enough of terrariums, ever! So what a perfect gift. This brilliant video from Design Sponge walks you through it step by step. I am really loving this idea! A little touch of green for those who are covered in snow!

Baby pies! I need to have baby pies now. And they’re all tied up with their tiny strings and tiny tags and tiny deliciousness…

I did homemade strawberry jam for my wedding favors. All the girls in my family went strawberry picking as a family….then my Mom made the jam.
We made round labels to cover the tops with our logo on it and giving my Mom credit for her hard work.
We were going to do blueberries, because our wedding was in Maine, but it was much easier to pick strawberries!! And the color of the jam matched our wedding colors!!
Everyone loved them….some people opened them that night and used it on the bread!!
