My Wedding: Part 2

April 9th, 2009 @ 2:46 pm by Llubav

So, here’s more stationery — I didn’t realize how much we did ourselves until now! Crazy! The save-the-date project was a lot of fun. A great idea thanks to my husband. We printed the information on beige heavy stock paper, cut the shape of a barn, cut a little window and door, folded it and placed it into a brown envelope along with a map of the area where everyone was staying.

The wedding program had a gold skeleton key stamp. This is very meaningful to me, not because we have over 100 old keys hanging on one of our living room walls, but because even before meeting Chris’ mother, she sent back a key with him to add to my collection. It came in a little pouch with a note that said, “this may be the key to my son’s heart” -isn’t that so sweet? He proposed two weeks later. :-)

We printed a short story about the horseshoes we gave to all our guests. We put them in a burlap sack stamped with “Virginia is for Lovers” with our names and date. Did I mention we got married in a stable? So the horseshoes, which are symbolic for good luck, were also totally appropriate for the occasion.

Have a lovely day!

xoxo

Women Artists Event Update

April 8th, 2009 @ 10:55 am by Llubav

This past Saturday April 4th, Abitare held their very first women artists event. It was an honor to be part of this event and even more thrilling to share the room with two wonderful and talented artists whom I totally admire -Francis Palmer and Sarah Magid. Take a look at the fantastic stuff they do -it’s amazing!

Frances creates handmade pottery, and she is currently helping a ceramic factory in Buffalo stay in business -great products all made in the USA! I read about her 4 years ago in Martha Stewart Weddings and fell in love with her pieces. She’s a real darling as well; it was truly lovely to finally meet her!

Sarah is an organic baker, stylist, designer and mother of two! She makes the most delicious cakes and desserts, and her designs are inspired by fashion -it’s a fabulous combination! Check out her blog for more sweet ideas.

My Wedding: Part 1

April 7th, 2009 @ 12:23 pm by Llubav

I’ve been having so much fun with my brand new scanner, and I just couldn’t wait to scan some of the stationery from our wedding. As promised, I will be sharing the process and moments of what our big day was like. So showing the paper goods would be a good start. My husband hand-cut large sheets of heavy stock, cold press paper, and then we screen printed all the components on our little kitchen table. I had three screens burned with special silk for paper printing: one for the main envelope and the return address, another screen for just invitations, and one more for the rsvp, gift tag, thank you card, table card and name card.

This project was a true test of the love we have for each other because screen printing takes a lot of time, patience and coordination. For me the icing on the cake was being able to design and print our invitations. For my husband, the icing on the cake was not having to pay for them. ;)

A Colorful Wedding

April 6th, 2009 @ 12:07 pm by Llubav

A few months ago, Melissa and Patrick in Texas asked me to make a wedding album cover. Before then I had never made one, but I loved the idea! I also made the couple’s ring pillow, so I wanted to keep the two pieces cohesive but at the same time give each their own personality.

Melissa had a cheery and festive color palette to begin with -purple, orange, hot pink, yellow, magenta, and crimson to name a few. The pillow design consists of different types of flowers taken from the bouquet such as cala lilies, peonies, roses and tulips. I added some silver metallic stitching along the border for a modern handkerchief feeling.

Southern Belle

Gardenia2

Photos by 3 photographers

I created this gardenia last fall out of my love for the South. It reminds me of my trips to Athens, Georgia in the spring, and the sweet fragrances that surround the house and garden of my friends Lucy and Buddy.

The flower has gold metallic bead embellishment for a little sparkle -perfect for a bride, a flower girl or just to wear around town. It is sure to sass up any kind of hairstyle.

Claire’s Calla Lilies

March 30th, 2009 @ 2:40 pm by Llubav

Charlotte contacted me in December about making a ring pillow for her sister Claire’s July wedding. I thought ’how sweet’…I have a soft spot for sisters as I have two. Charlotte told me there wasn’t a wedding theme but she had seen a previous pillow with calla lilies, and thought it was a great fit for her sister’s romantic and elegant wedding. She sent me a few photos of the bride’s and flower girls’ dresses along with the color palette of red, ivory, champagne and gold. What a beautiful gift from one sister to another.

Hope you enjoy!

Romance in Hungary

March 27th, 2009 @ 12:34 pm by Llubav

I recently shipped a ring pillow to Melissa and Joey in Florida. After looking at Melissa’s inspiration board and learning of their love for travel, the idea of a postcard came to mind. Travel, maps, luggage, postcards and feathers would all be incorporated, and this worked perfectly with her bridal colors of clover, ivory, chocolate, and a touch of pink. Melissa loved the concept, especially since it was in keeping with her taste for the whimsical. To bring a sense of elegance, I decided to use subtle embroidery rather than felt appliqué. We were so excited to see all the elements of her wedding come together in the pillow. She requested all Hungarian felt because Budapest is where Joey proposed. I used a creamy vintage embroidery yarn to create the silhouettes of the postcard and stamp, and a finer yarn for their initials. It was Melissa’s idea to have their initials on the left side of the postcard. I think that was a perfect touch.

A Flower on Screen

March 26th, 2009 @ 1:37 pm by Llubav

When a stylist for Legally Blonde 2 contacted me about making flowers for the movie, I pretty much died and went to heaven. I was speechless, excited, nervous and so tickled all at the same time. She wanted three different sized roses, but at the time I was only making little ones. So, the idea of making 5” flowers was mind blowing. She requested black, pink and ivory roses, but she only got to use the smallest ivory one -it is sitting on Reese’s left shoulder when she arrives in Washington! It’s the scene where Reese is looking at herself in her compact mirror. She is wearing a light blue outfit, and the rose pin is on the top of the red scarf.

At the time the movie came out, the owners of Hable closed the office and we took a trip to the movie theater to see the rose pin and some Hable products that were also featured in the movie. It was great to see our work on the big screen.

Enjoy! xoxo

Candy for Your Eyes

March 25th, 2009 @ 1:32 pm by Llubav

I always look forward to our trips to Michigan because I know we will come back home with a unique find. Last year we found this amazing paper chandelier, known as pajak in Polish which means spider, at the Polish Art Center in Detroit. It’s very old and the colors are just so gorgeous -the photos don’t do it justice. Some of the colors have faded from being exposed to light over the years and if you get real close you can see the tips have pastel colors. And if you peer deep down into the curled paper, the deepest color is hidden; it’s truly fantastic. It’s all handmade with color tissue paper, thread and natural straw.

This is an old tradition that Polish families do during the winter months; then they display them around the house or above the dining table for celebrations. I think is so important to pass on old customs like this one because it’s really what makes a country and the world so, so precious. We live in a Polish neighborhood and I have asked some Polish businesses about these chandeliers and people think I’m crazy because they have no idea what I’m talking about. I guess it must be a dying tradition.
