Donna and Bobby came to us after their wedding and asked if we could do something a little different from the norm. Obviously, our ears perked up.
They were looking for something that in our opinion, was to look a little on the gothic side. Ever seen Sweeney Todd?
Donna brought a hair stylist and a makeup artist to our studio 3 hours before the shoot, and they did her up nice and good. They even put a little eyeliner on Bobby, but in the end we felt it was a little too Green Day.
I think this time John wins the shoot with “best Sweeney photo” (see first image below). I was a close second.
Here are some of our favs - some “a la Sweeney” and some “a la Still Motion”.
It was an intimate wedding with lots of love. Out in wine country, we had a lot to work with - from the behind-the-scenes of an elegant winery to the underside of a transport truck.
There are some people in this world that are intimidated by the camera, and then there are people like Jen, who can look into the camera and look radiant every time…

Who ever said a shoe shot had to be a close-up? This is one of my favourite shoe shots.

This type of photo is particularly difficult to execute. Shot using a tilt-shift lens, external flash, and movment (of the shoes), this photo combines three elements of photography that are difficult to shoot even on their own.
What does a tilt-shift lens do?

Justin Demers, a fellow photographer and friend of ours got married this summer. He and Michelle had their wedding in Tofino, B.C., and we attended their reception in Toronto when they got back.
A few weeks later, it was Jen’s turn to get married. Jen is Justin’s sister - a really fun girl that got down and dirty with us. Michelle was one of Jen’s bridesmaids (and was very helpful in organizing family formals - thanks Michelle), and Justin was shooting Super 8 film for his sister and Evan.
It was a really fun day with awesome lighting (a thin film of cloud across the sky), and some great images.
Here are a few of my favs.
It was perfect weather, warm with a breeze. Just enough to give Andrea’s veil some movement.
The day started out at the family cottage, up on a hill overlooking the water. It was a gorgeous setting for Andrea and her bridesmaids to get ready. The setting was so beautiful that Andrea and Joel decided to see each other before the ceremony so they could get some photos there.
Overall it was a relaxed day with some off-roading with the couple, and an elegant dinner to top it off.
Here are some of my favourite shots from the day.
A couple days after their wedding, we took Amit and Mandy out for a Day-After shoot. I tried to persuade them to do a TTD shoot - but when you go all the way to India to have your garments custom made…. I guess it’s hard to wrap trashing around the brain.
I could see the look on Mandy’s face when she saw the rubbish we’d be putting her into at the shoot location we chose. “Don’t worry” I told her. I assured her that it just looked like we’d be trashing, but we really wouldn’t.
Without a thread out of place (on Mandy at least), we finished the shoot. Here are some of our favourite images:
Photographs… they can be so many things to so many people. They can be traditional, alternative, candid, posed, real, fake, cool, cheesy.
For me, photographs should carry a story, whether it’s obvious or not. As a wedding photographer, it’s my job to document the events of the day by capturing moments, and helping people to relive them days, months, years later.
For many, this means taking a series of photographs that combined tell a story. Much like the act of photographing a ceremony - the images when placed together in an album are able to bring back all the emotions that were felt at the time.
But what about a lone image? I feel it is much more challenging to tell a story with just one photograph. This is a challenge that I will be continuing to conquer for the rest of my life.
