One of the things I absolutely love about my job, is being inspired by the people I meet. Engagement sessions are a great chance for me to really experiment and take risks in ways that I wouldn’t be able to on a wedding day, especially when there’s a really cool location and a couple that’s up for ANYTHING! Marlena & Nathaniel live in Des Moines, Iowa, but decided to return to their hometown of Olney, IL (famous for their albino squirrels) for their engagement session. Disclaimer: As a general rule, I don’t like to post “normal” pictures on my blog, but that doesn’t mean I don’t take them. Anyone can take “normal/pretty/safe” pictures. First of all, could this couple be ANY cuter?!?! Their babies are going to be supermodels! Secondly… this wedding had EVERYONE in tears, and not just during the ceremony, but all night long! There was so much love surrounding Nicole & Darric, it was really inspiring… and I think we managed to use every kleenex in the building.

You may remember Jenn & AJ’s engagement session, which we photographed at Indiana State University and the Sky King Airport in Terre Haute, IN where AJ trained to become a pilot. One of the most unique things about their engagement is that they decided to retain their purity before marriage by not even sharing a KISS until their wedding day!! So you can only imagine the build up of every single minute leading up to their wedding ceremony. Leading up to the ceremony, nerves were pretty high in anticipation of everything going as perfectly as planned, so when the ceremony actually happened, everyone just let loose with tears and emotion.

I absolutely adore Beth & Fred. Spending time with them is like sitting in on an “I Love Lucy” show - there’s just so much comedy, sarcasm, and love in the air that I think I walked away from our engagement session with cheek cramps from laughing so much! They have a really cute home in Washington, DC (loooove the green wall and don’t even get me started on all of the awesome furniture) which they share with their adorable dog, Ruckus.

How do I love thee, let me count the ways…

I’m at such a loss for words when it comes to Megan & Eric. I feel like we’ve been friends forever, even though we only met last year. These two are amazing - together and separate. Their warmth, generosity, spirit, individuality, and creative conscious just blow me away. I feel like we’ve supported each other a lot through the last year and I hope that friendship never ever ends. Karen & Tim had a very romantic wedding with tons of casual elegance topped off with a dollop of fun! This couple just oozes joy and happiness in everything they do. When I first talked to Karen, she had so many crazy things happen to her that would make most people pull their hair out or sink into depression - but she always managed to laugh it all off and concentrate on the positive.. I really admire strength like that!!

I had soooo much fun with these engagement photos!! I met Christine when we were both in the Music Education program at Oakland University and found that she was one of the nicest people ever, and that we had a lot in common. She and Joce were high school sweethearts, except that they went their separate ways for a while after high school only to fall in love again…. and this time they’re both ready to make that life-long commitment to each other. When Christine showed me some awesome pictures that she and Joce took of each other at Clinton River Park when they were in high school, I thought it would be great if we could go back to the park and be inspired by the fun memories they had there.

Interestingly, I first met Matt at Costco where he was working as Photo Lab Tech. I was running some test prints through their machines and testing out the effects of different papers, inks, and processing. For the record, I LOVE Costco for my personal family and vacation photos, but don’t use them for my client or fine art printing (not that they aren’t worthy!) Matt helped me understand that mini-labs make automatic corrections to images which actually ends up ruining the ones I’ve already corrected and processed! From then on, I learned that I needed to make sure the lab turned off any auto-corrections to my images before printing them. I digress… so anyway, that’s how we met.
