carnation wedding bouquet carnation wedding flowers

Carnations? Ick. That’s what I thought six months ago - before I saw the light.

One evening, I was doing some research for an article I was writing about wedding flowers, when an image of a carnation wedding bouquet jumped out at me. No, it can’t be! Carnations? My “ick” suddenly became a “wow!”

I had never seen carnations grouped together before without any other flowers to steal their thunder. They were always used as filler and almost always paired with baby’s breath. Who knew that they had such power in numbers?

Not only do they look fabulous “en masse”, they’re inexpensive and last a long time. What more could one ask from such a sweet and humble flower?

I scoured the web for some photos of carnation bouquets and here are a few of the best.

the giving tree free template save the dates

Okay, I admit it. I have never read Shel Silverstein’s The Giving Tree, but I do love the look of these save-the-dates. And guess what? They’re free for the taking.

I found this free wedding template over at Merriment Design - a lovely blog that’s all about sharing awesome craft and design ideas.

Lavender bouquet photo by Tine Hofmann

I’ve got a thing for herbs. Every year I plant lavender, rosemary, parsley, sage, lemon thyme, chives, dill, mint, basil and oregano. By mid-summer, I’ve got enough herbs to supply a hoppin’ gourmet restaurant.

I use some of the herbs in my cooking (I also use mint, lemon thyme and lavender in my handmade soap), but often I have lots left over.

What should I do with rest of my lovely plants? Well, if I happened to be planning a wedding, I’d have plenty of uses for my leftover herbs! Especially if I was having a green wedding.

Lately, I’ve discovered so many beautiful ways that herbs can be incorporated into a wedding - from the bouquets to the boutonnières. Here are some ideas that I love:

About Christina @ Intimate Weddings

Junkin’ is one of my favorite pastimes. I head out to resale shops once a week looking for vintage treasures. And now that garage sale season is heating up - look out!

I love the idea of giving used items a second life. Besides, I‘m the sentimental type and I love finding things that bring me back to my childhood. Over the years I’ve collected children’s books, toys (just the other day I got my hands on the original Fashion Plates for $3!), games, linens and cookware - all for nostalgia’s sake.

Resale shops and garage sales are also great places to shop for your wedding - especially if you are going for the shabby chic look. Online stores like Etsy and Ebay are also great sources of previously loved items.

And if you are looking for vintage or used wedding dresses and bridesmaids gowns - there are sites like Vintageous.

Let’s take a look at some of the wonderful ways you can have a green wedding with recycled items.

About Christina @ Intimate Weddings

Creating a DIY wedding is not always an easy process. Sometimes you will feel discouraged, frustrated, and maybe even ready to give up. Well, take heart. Your feelings are perfectly normal –common even. Here are the six stages of a DIY wedding according to Sara Cotner from 2,000 Dollar Wedding.

I undertook several DIY projects for my wedding, including our embroidered life story around the bottom of my dress, my partner’s tie, our invitations, flower pins for the wedding party, name tags for the “Welcome Picnic”, program fans for the ceremony, wedding favors, a wedding quilt, cloth napkins for the reception, our website and a ring pillow.

You can’t turn on the TV without being blasted with news about the tumultuous economy. Job losses. Plummeting stocks. A real estate market that continues to tank. It’s enough to make any girl get the jitters. And as if the recession wasn’t enough, you’ve got to plan a wedding! What if you can’t afford the wedding you really want? Check out these high-impact ideas on how to slash your wedding costs.

  1. Invite fewer guests. Cutting back your wedding guest list to include only those who are close to you will make a significant difference in your wedding cost. You’ll save on reception costs such as centerpieces (you’ll need less), food, drinks, favors, wedding cake (smaller is cheaper) and wedding venues. You just might find that the savings will mean you can splurge on the things that really matter to you. Besides, given the recession, there’s a good chance that some of your friends and distant family might actually feel relieved that they don’t have to come up with hundreds of dollars in travel expenses and wedding gifts.
  2. Have the ceremony and reception in one place. Many small wedding venues such as inns and bed and breakfasts can accommodate both the ceremony and reception. Chances are you’ll have less of a rental fee - and you’ll save money on transportation and decorations.
  3. DIY. Thank heavens for DIY culture! With a few clicks of the mouse you can learn to make just about anything. There’s a plethora of websites on how to make everything from bridal centerpieces to edible favors. Bridal forums and DIY wedding books are also great resources for how-to info. The earlier you plan the more time you’ll have for DIY wedding projects.
