A Festive Handmade Wedding

March 24th, 2009 @ 12:35 pm by Llubav

My friends Kristen and Josh got married in beautiful Athens, Georgia last summer in a fantastic brick house with a lovely garden. The house was so amazing! It looked like it came out of a page from the magazine “World of Interiors.” I had been there before to do a photo shoot while working at hable and wanted to move in right away.  When Kristen told me her wedding was going to take place there and mentioned all the wonderful decorations she and her friends where making for the occasion, I just knew it was going to be the prettiest celebration, Southern style!

When I got her invitation, I fell over -it was the cutest thing, and she designed it all herself! I’m all about handmade goods with lots of personality. It came in a handmade craft-paper envelope stitched with color thread along the edges. Party flags, birds and a tree-of-life were some of the details on the 10 1/2 x 16 1/2 folded poster. The colors where light and dark blue, golden yellow, brown, watermelon, olive, and avocado to name a few -very festive. I made the bird and party flags idea the main focus on the pillow and put the bird close to the center so it looks like its beak is holding the rings. I added a few beads on the bird’s tale for some sparkle and stitched some stars here and there with gold metallic thread. It turned out lovely.

Roses for Everyone

March 23rd, 2009 @ 4:33 pm by Llubav

Hi there! Hope y’all are having a lovely day. I want to share some pictures of my son’s baptism which happened in January. We had family come from Texas, Michigan and Virginia and friends from the NYC area. The mass was beautiful and Mikus looked sharp in his all white outfit. While preparing for all the activities that weekend I thought it would be great to have rose pins made for everyone taking part in the ceremony and a good way for people to know who the godparents were. I decided to go for the small rose pins in shades of blue and grey keeping it neutral, unisex and to go with the invitations.

I think they turned out perfect for the occasion without being flashy -a beautiful detail to add a punch to the wardrobe and a timeless keepsake that can also be worn over and over again. My husband has his pinned on his dark grey wool coat and wears it to work everyday. I wear my dark grey rose with black and purple.

The Mimi and Andy Pillows

March 18th, 2009 @ 2:38 pm by Llubav

My friend Mimi got married in Dallas last summer and wanted two ring pillows for her and her then groom. I was excited by the idea of making two pillows and was looking forward to the challenge of not making the groom’s look too feminine. I think they turned out great! I love the classic and simple design of the three peonies (a detail taken from the back of her gorgeous dress).

Pretty in Pink

March 17th, 2009 @ 9:37 am by Llubav

I think of pink all the time. It makes me happy and I feel pretty when I wear it. There are lots of shades of pink but I personally love hot pink -the hotter the better. Here are some sweets I’ve been admiring lately:

1. Bloom books have the best color stories, along with fantastic photographs. If you are looking for a great color palette for your wedding or just about any project these books are sure to give you great visual inspiration. I have been a fan and collector for years. And I’ve had the pleasure to hear founder Lidewij Edelkoort speak about color while attending FIT in New York.

Caliente!

March 16th, 2009 @ 3:31 pm by Llubav

When the ladies at Abitare brought up the idea of me making sachets out of the little fashion ornaments I was tickled. But I didn’t think wool felt was the best material being thick and all and was worried the scent would have a hard time coming through the fabric. Well, my worries were a waste of time because they turned out great and they smell wonderful. They make the perfect gift for a mom, a friend, a bridesmaid or yourself! If you live in Brooklyn Heights or anywhere near the area or just want to take a trip there, you can find these cute french lavender sachets at Abitare on Henry and Atlantic.

The Christy Pillow

March 13th, 2009 @ 6:24 pm by Llubav

I have to say that it was a true pleasure working with Christy from Texas whose wedding was in the country with lots of wildflowers. She was my very first client after Grace from Design*Sponge wrote about the ring pillows back in September. Christy was so excited and open to all the ideas I had for her pillow, which made it that much more fun. At first the red was a bit of a question, but when I presented it as a friend to go with her sassy red patent leather shoes-she was all go. Thanks Christy!

The Magic Corner

March 12th, 2009 @ 9:34 am by Llubav

Everyone needs a little space of their own. Well, here’s my corner where all the magic happens. Before this winter, I had a great big table made out of mdf board attached to bright yellow metal sawhorse-legs from Home Depot -totally home made. I loved having all the bottles of beads and ribbons in front of me and all over the table, but it started to get a bit crowded and my working space was getting smaller. So I had to think of a solution, to get a bookcase where they could all be organized and stay away from the dust but still look pretty. Now, I have all my beads and sequins in color groups so I can find what I need fast and easily.

I enjoy looking out the window and checking out all the action going on while I work on my projects. The lighting in the room is excellent and perfect for putting color palettes together, sewing and for shooting products.

I outgrew my work station. This is what it looked like up until last September. See what it looks like now…

Lucy Ring Pillow

March 11th, 2009 @ 8:34 am by Llubav

LUCY RING PILLOW Here it is! the very first ring pillow I made for my friend Lucy Allen Gillis that jump started my ring pillow business.  Lucy’s sister  Rinne was so sweet to send me pictures she took at the wedding.  As I’d mentioned before there were no pictures or details emailed to me about the wedding — just a visit over the phone and this design came to mind.  It was a fall wedding in the country. The flower arrangements had colors in orange, red, wine and butternut and of course green.  Chocolate was also another color used… The bridesmaids wore light coral and the groomsmen linen suits. I decided to go with a wreath because when I think of fall, I think of all those beautiful wreaths one can make with all the dried leaves and flowers… And then I thought how pretty to have the rings nestled in the center of the wreath.  I used about 30 something little leaves in brown and green and about 30 circles as berries, then I added some beads and some gold metallic thread (a Llubav must) here and there for a little shimmer.  I was so happy that Lucy asked me to do this for her — I think it turned out beautiful. You can also check it out in the Winter 2009 Martha Stewart Weddings. Take a look and enjoy, xophotos by Rinne Allen

Pillow Talk

March 9th, 2009 @ 6:32 pm by Llubav

Good Evening!

Hope y’all had a lovely weekend. First, I want to thank y’all so much for the sweet emails and the warm welcome since Weddingbee Pro introduced me last Friday. It really means a lot to me that you took the time to read my story and comment. Thank you!

People ask me all the time how I ended up making ring pillows. Well, the truth is that it kind of fell into my lap. My dear friend Lucy wanted a little something from me in her wedding and asked if I would consider making a ring pillow. I was thrilled and honored by the idea!

We talked about flower colors, location, season and all the girly stuff and I took it from there. I presented her with an autumn wreath design made out of 30-35 little leaves, hand-cut and individually stitched in the shape of a wreath. After that challenging opportunity I made another pillow for another friend, and then an order came and then a couple of more…and that’s really how it happened.

Stay tuned for pictures of the first pillow I made. xo
