I always ask for your questions every week through e-mail or twitter, and you guys have been so awesome about giving me feedback. Many of the questions I receive merit long responses, but some can be answered easily with just a few sentences. Those questions and my answers are as follows, for your skimming pleasure.
Q: What is your favorite color combination to use for your flowers? (from Amanda)
A: It’s still too early, but I’m feeling fallish. Probably from working on so many autumn weddings right now.

Sara Jane and Meg came to me a few months ago and asked me to work within a budget to create two happy, whimsical bouquets for their August 15th wedding. I couldn’t be more pleased with the results.

What an awesome week! I could have done two photo posts because there is so much to mention.
I received a wonderful, wonderful package from Meg Duerksen–the pillow I ordered from her Etsy shop! And all of the proceeds go to a great cause.

The pillow was a great deal and much bigger than I expected, and it’s washable! The box was a great treat for Turbo, too.
A reader asked an awesome question…

A: Before the ceremony, we had a cocktail hour with mostly swing and big band music by classic, agreeable artists like Frank Sinatra, Etta James, James Brown, Stevie Wonder, Glen Miller, Benny Goodman, etc.
We made a playlist and just had our sound engineer run it on Windows Media Player (I know) during the wedding. We had an entrance song (I Think I Love You by the Partridge Family, a nod to my David Cassidy-obsessed mom), then had the ceremony and went right into the dancing. Here’s a short list of some of the songs I remember…
First dance: Love at First Sight by Kylie Minogue
Father/daughter: What a Wonderful World by Louis Armstrong
Mother/son: I Will Follow You by Ricky Nelson
And then to get the party started…
The Party - Justice ft. Uffie
Crazy For You - Madonna (basically tons of Madonna)
A Cause des Garcons - Yelle
Fantasy - Mariah Carey
Evil - Ladytron
Guilt is a Useless Emotion - New Order
What Them Girls Like - Ludacris
American Boy - Estelle
Toxic - Britney Spears

I was up at Lake Okoboji in Spirit Lake, Iowa with my parents and grandparents for the weekend. A few years ago my folks bought a place up here and visiting in the summer is better than staying in a tropical resort. My mom cooks for me, I can sit on the dock and work in my big hat and sunscreen, there are always parties and social events to attend, and I still stay up all night working.
I don’t mind at all. Sometimes I search my brain looking for feelings of resent, or exhaustion, even annoyance with my work. With the responsibility of working for 25 brides per month, all of whom are counting on me and trusting me to deliver custom flowers made only for them, I feel like I ought to be exasperated.
It’s not only flowers–95% of my customers also ask for accessories and products ranging from belts and capelets and teapot centerpieces and veils and “just married” banners and hairpieces and special custom gift wrapping. I usually say yes because it is fun for me. It is fun for me even when I have been awake for 30 hours and my employees are already loaded up with as much work as they can handle and I am still waiting on shipments of new wool felt and there are 500 other things fighting for space at the top of my priority list. (E-mails, my new FAQ and Pricing pages, blog interviews, and silk chiffon pom poms, I will get to you soon.)
I feel like I ought to be exasperated but I’m not. I’m only motivated. I was talking to my friends Eric and Steve last night at a local bar at 2a.m. about this –if I wasn’t motivated, I would sleep. I would have a long restful night of sleep and wake up with the comfort of knowing what my day would bring. But I never know, I never know what I will have to wake up and do right now now now because The Big Idea just hit me and if I don’t do it, I will never be restful. I am always motivated. So I remain awake at night. It is when the magic happens.
Well….almost. Not quite. But that’s one of the subject lines I have been longing to type for years. And it’s within my reach, but I need your help!

Martha Stewart Weddings is hosting a contest to find the best DIY wedding crafts out there. The winning designs will be featured on an episode of The Martha Stewart Show.
I have a big poster in my studio of my goals for 2009, and one of them is “get on the Martha Stewart Show”!!!! I really want to win this contest and reach my goal.
I entered two bouquet pictures and a picture of a boutonniere in the contest, and if you could vote for each one or leave a comment I would appreciate it so much! There is a quick one-page registration process. Martha Stewart will not sell your information to third-parties. Here are the links to vote:
1. A picture of Heather’s bouquet (Blogged about here, if you’re interested.)
2. A picture of the flowers from my wedding
3. A boutonniere from Jen’s wedding! (And here’s the post for that wedding!)
Just complete the short registration process and click on the stars to vote!

Jen was the first bride I ever worked with who is a real-life personal friend of mine. Her peacock/jewel-toned wedding a few weeks ago was gorgeous and fun with lots of cupcakes and dancing, and it was extra special because I got to finally see some of my work in action!
Here is the post I made about her flowers …now behold Jen and Chad in all their glory! And this is going to be a picture post overload because I love all of them. Photos by Photography by Lara .

One of the most popular questions I receive is “How did you and Professor Lasertron get engaged?” It’s a great story (although I’m biased), a common question, and I can easily write a long post about it! ![]()
One February night in 2007, I was up late at my apartment working on button flower orders. I was thinking about my boyfriend, and I thought “this is the man I want to marry.”
Always impatient and not one for sitting around, I decided that I ought to go after it and propose to Dave.
First, I began looking for an engagement ring. I found jeweler Kathryn Reichert through Etsy. We had previously purchased matching posey rings from her that said “Megan loves David/David loves Megan” on the inside of the band that we wore. We absolutely love them, so Kathryn was the obvious choice for David’s engagement ring. She worked closely with me to create a custom piece that was perfect for him. Here they are in their unwashed glory.

I also created a little book that told the story of how we met. I illustrated each page with drawings of us.

I got an e-mail from The Turtle Love Committee blog saying that they had seen a picture of our nontraditional rings and wanted to do a profile on my husband and I for their website. Dave and I then took some better pictures of our rings for the article. I’ll be sure to link to it once it goes up!
