Walking along Broadway in NYC Thursday afternoon, I was immediately drawn to a window display. At first, I thought “gorgeous glass sculpture”, but then looked closer. I was actually staring at water bottles filled with colored water - genius!

Last year, I worked on a wedding for a couple getting married in the Northern California wine country. They had the wonderful idea of sending a bottle of wine as their save-the-date, which set the tone early for a lovely, elegant affair with no details spared! They decided on Nickelson's Invitations in the OC and UK for their invites as well as menus and other printed materials.
The escort cards matched the menus in design and were creatively placed amongst rows of pears as the guests entered the reception area. These adorable touches exemplified the personality and thoroughness of the happy couple and made for a perfect wedding day!

Clients and wedding guests sometimes wonder about the difference between escort cards and place cards, but it is very simple. Escort cards send your guests to their correct table, while place cards tell them which seat is theirs at the table. It is important to at least have assigned tables, so there is a smooth transition from your ceremony to your reception, without guests wondering where they should sit or with whom.

Instead of a tent card, why not write on fall leaves? These leaves I did for my client in San Francisco. Her whole wedding had a ginko leaf theme, and these settings definitely tied it all together. I wrote on each leaf with white calligraphy ink and they turned out swimmingly for her destination wedding in Hawaii!

One question I get asked quite frequently as a calligrapher is “What is the difference between a place card and an escort card?” And the answer, simply put, is that your escort cards will be put at a central location at the reception, either organized on a table by last name, or hanging on a tree, or some other creative display method. Your guests will find their card, and will then locate their table number indicated somewhere on the card.

That’s what I call myself sometimes. Often I need to come up with last minute ideas for a wedding, and they are usually non-floral emergencies. The most requested thing happens to pertain to the infamous place card table. What to do, what to do.
Here are two simple and rather attractive ideas. The first involves making a wooden tray and filling the tray with rose petals or even organic dried goods. I love this idea and it’s fairly ingenious. The other involves making large boards that you can “pin” pre printed cards to. Both of these ideas are creative, relatively fast to make, and attractive.
