For this wedding shoot, I had the privilege of shooting with my good friend Junshien. He’s a kick-butt photographer who's moving fast in the wedding photography scene. He shoots a lot with Scott Robert, who is known for his workshops and high energy. It’s fun being able to work together in this industry to try and elevate each other. I have met very few photographers who are closed off or seem competitive. I think David Jay’s example of the more you give the more you receive in this industry is really true. I’ve been finding that the more I give of my time and energy to my fellow photographers, the more they share the love back to me, sometimes tenfold! Junshien is one of those guys who does that, and it’s been fun helping each other out.
Jeannie and Galen got married in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park in front of the Queen Wilhelmina Tulip Gardens. I love second shooting, as it enables me to take on a whole different perspective. It also reminds me how hard of a job it is to be a second shooter.
The girls made the guys wait outside and bargain their way into Jeannie’s apartment to pick her up. This is one of those shots where I remember thinking, how do I capture this moment?
Karen and David were married on a stormy winter day. Storms have a way of wreaking havoc on electricity, mascara, hair, fancy clothes, photography equipment and, most importantly, nerves. That is why we were so impressed that Karen, David and their entourage were calm, supportive and joyful the whole day! It was an extreme blessing for Jerry and I to work with the community at East Bay Baptist. We feel so at home when we see all their familiar faces. Thank you so much, Karen and David!!

Karen wore pretty and comfortable blue flats.

Lawyers know how to work it. We were at the Pasadena City Hall and didn't have a permit to shoot there, because it was a Sunday and who needs a permit on a Sunday? Well Terence used his lawyer connections to get the security guard to calm down. After that incident Maggie and Terence's wedding went as smooth as butter. We had enough time to walk around different church grounds and get some really nice shots of Maggie and her dress. They also had a candy bar at the reception, which is a win for everyone. Some highlights from the night!

I knew Paul J when he was just known as just J. I have no idea where he picked up the Paul part, but it’s very cool. He’s definitely one of the most down-to-earth and chill guys I know. Veronica is one of those girls that is so warm and full of positive energy. I’ve gotten to know Veronica from all the past weddings that she’s been a part of as a bridesmaid and makeup artist. If any of you brides are looking for a makeup person, let me know and I’ll pass the on info to her. That was a shameless plug, but she’s really awesome, so she deserves it.
Veronica has been a blog stalker from the very beginning. I think she was the first one to comment on our blog, too! She’s a huge fan of theimageisfound, of which we are also ginormous fans, so we definitely wanted to bring our A-game to their shoot. This session was a lot of fun because for the first time we actually had some audience participation going on. All I had to do was ask Veronica to bat her eyelashes at various strangers and ask them to do some crazy stunts for us.
This was taken right next to a huge group of people having lunch at the Ferry Building.
Before Kee met Gloria, he was one of the happiest guys I’d ever known. We’re good friends from college, and I think he’s gotten even happier now that he’s with Gloria. I didn’t think that was possible, because he has one of the biggest smiles I know, and it’s about 2mm wider now than before. He couldn’t stop smiling through the whole shoot, and it was fun trying to see how long he could go without smiling between shots. It’s definitely infectious.
It’s only fitting that Kee ended up with Gloria, who also has a great smile. What’s up with you happy people? Needless to say, we all had a fun time getting out to SF at 7 am on a Sunday morning! We wanted that nice golden light from the sunrise.
Did I mention how Kee couldn’t stop smiling and laughing through the whole shoot? Gloria was lovin’ it.
When we met Jennilee for the first time in Union Square, I think she was pretty nervous. Well…I would be nervous too if I was about to get my picture taken for two hours straight. After a few shots while Brett made us laugh with his funny antics, we all realized that this would be a fun and very refreshing (for us photographers) session.
We wanted to hit all the cool spots, so we just kept on walking and walking. We were even thinking about walking from North Beach to Union Square. Brett and Jennilee were such good sports through it all, and I think we managed to get some killer shots in. I loved that they were always up for something creative and had great suggestions throughout the whole day.
Falling in love. Literally.
Curtis and Shana are awesome photographers from Missouri. They have their own studio specializing in seniors, babies and children at ShanaWatkins.com. So when they contacted us and wanted us to do their engagement session, we were stoked! They flew all the way out to San Francisco, one of their favorite spots, for this session. Shana wanted something more urban and edgy, because their wedding will be full of greenery. That’s one of my favorite things to hear, because I love the look and feel of an urban shoot.
I can’t blame them for wanting to come all the way out to SF for a shoot, because the weather is so nice here! Curtis and Shana were so easygoing and fun to work with. They were up for anything, even though they probably felt really silly at times. There was one shot in the park where Shana was lying down and Curtis was on top of her with me shooting down on them to get the cool-looking grass around them. I wanted to make sure I got a good shot with the hands in the right place, so it took some time to get that. Fun times!
The lovely Shana.
I love pre-wedding shoots. And post-wedding shoots. What’s up with all these shoots nowadays? I can hardly keep up with all of them. Here’s all the various shoots I have seen and heard about: pre-engagement, proposal, pre-wedding, engagement, destination engagement, boudoir, bridal, wedding, destination wedding, post-wedding, trash the dress, anniversary. Am I missing one?!
Well, Kenneth and Connie had a pre-wedding shoot and then an engagement shoot afterwards. A pre-wedding shoot is when the couple gets all dressed up in their wedding attire before their wedding, and we go on a shoot together. How fun is that?! I love this, because we get more time to shoot with the couple, and the bride in her dress makes for some amazing images.
Here are a couple of images from the shoot. Can’t wait for their wedding in June!
Ingrid is getting SO good with editing images now. She blew me away when she showed me this one.
This WPPI has inspired us to step up our game to the next level. The foundation workshop several weeks ago helped us step up another level. I'm now pretty amped for 2009! We've already had 4 engagement shoots and 6 weddings this year!
And what a great way to intro the super fun engagement session that I had with Wency and Steve. I got the privilege of getting to know their foodie side first hand and got the inside scoop on how they met online. We had fun playing around in Crissy Field and downtown San Fran. I was almost tempted to share their hot dog with them at the end of the night, but Wency slammed it down the hatch as she was starvin' by the end of our session together. Can't wait to see their wedding in a month!

We get a lot of requests to shoot on the UC Berkeley campus. Every time Jerry and I start a shoot there, we try our hardest to do something unique. Luckily the campus is peppered with interesting backdrops and strange “tree people” who we would encounter on a later shoot.
This shoot was particularly easy because Kyle knows how to make Tiffany laugh. They were so open to doing anything for the shot. We asked them to do a running jump over us over and over again, to learn precariously over the edge of a tall stump, and, hardest of all, for Kyle to imitate Tiffany’s silly faces. This proved more challenging than it sounds since Tiffany is remarkably dexterous at making faces! It was so much fun working with you guys. I’m excited to see your photo-wedding favors.

Tiffany and Kyle wanted an image where we shot through stuff and they would be behind it. We walked around campus looking for good places to do this when we settled on this patch of tall grasses. I later realized that this area is actually a dry retention pond for dirty run-off to collect and then be purified by the grasses. Mmm, gross, interesting…and pretty!
