The handwritten note is dead. Paved over by pixels. Bludgeoned by bytes. It's been gone for years. Thrown to the curb like the things found at the back of closets during spring cleaning. Or is it?
According to The NY Times , handwritten typeface is back with a vengeance. Apparently, the word of sleek graphics have left us longing for the DIY approach to lettering. We've all seen this trend in the world of weddings too, where calligraphy is all the rage. Heck, you can even turn your own handwriting into a font.

This was a really fun project. The bride wanted stationery that was inspired by our Ashley collection. She also really wanted letterpress. Below is the result! Loving this as letterpress stationery…

Laura Hooper, Northridge, CA
Vendor: Calligraphy
Website: Laura Hooper Calligraphy
About Me: I've been practicing the art of calligraphy since the age of 12 and nothing gives me more pleasure than waking up each morning knowing I get to do what I do each day. I love having the ability to infuse my own personal style into each of my bride's special day. When I'm not working, I enjoy traveling, hiking, reading and painting; but most of the time I don't consider calligraphy to be work at all!

We've worked with two separate couples that have gotten married on Isla Mujeres, a small island off the coast of Mexico. We did a complete matching set for this couple including thank you cards with the adorable hotel icon that was threaded throughout their printed materials. They really made use of their map design, since once we had it all set they incorporated the icons into every aspect of their wedding, starting from the save the dates, all the way to the rehearsal dinner and wedding reception.
The escort cards looked so sweet as did the table signs (which used icons, instead of numbers). Being a destination wedding, they included a weekend itinerary on the reverse side of their map (I just love all the tropical icons!), and also had a welcome bag for their guests featuring the monogram that we created for them. You can also see that they used their monogram for personalized stamps on their wedding invitations - it was a great way to tie everything together and use small touches to make their day special!

I love this behind-the-scenes glimpse of shooting a MSWedding. It's no wonder the photographs of the invitations are so impeccable. They take a lot of work…and equipment! I have stood on a lot of furniture in my house in many random places trying to find the best natural light for photographing my stationery and invitations. I have a tripod, which has proved immensely helpful, but goodness look at that tripod! I need me one of those! Along with a stylist, crew, and pretty barn in the background.

I'm knee deep in weddings right now. Oh my! Still, I'm excited that I'm going to be writing a few posts for the betsywhite blog, Flights of Fancy (above is one of the beautiful color inspiration boards). I couldn't pass it up! I harbor a secret longing to be an invitation designer (I also long to be Samantha Brown, a romance/suspense writer and a wedding magazine editor-in-chief).
My decade-long love affair with all things paper started when my BFF, Jen K (now Jen Chuang) opened her own Papyrus in Pasadena. Jen no longer has her store in Old Town, but I'm completely sold when it comes to all things paper and all those who make it looks so incredible delicate, beautiful, and timeless. It looks easy and it's so not.
Gia Graham, betsywhite stationery boutique's founder, has been so kind to give me this chance to reach out to her faithful readers. I'm a big fan of all people who are driven, self starters, and attracted to beauty. What makes BW so special is that you can order an entire suite -save the dates, response cards, thank you cards, programs, menus, place cards and logo- on the site. As a floral and event designer, I love it when all the pieces work together. It is so needed and appreciated!

Hi! I'm Sarah, the printer and designer behind Parrott Design Studio, specializing in custom letterpress and screen printed wedding and event invitations, stationery, and paper goods. As a long-time fan of Weddingbee, I am overjoyed to be joining the amazing group of PROs here! I look forward to sharing my designs, inspiration, and the inner-workings of my studio.
But first, a bit about me!
I grew up in Portland, Maine, and I have always had an affinity for the ocean, mountains, birds, gardening, and the simple life. I have loved art all of my life - drawing, printmaking, painting, making books, sewing, and art history.
With a background in non-profit marketing and art history, I began the Parrott Design Studio (under my former name -Things Are Better With a Parrott) in 2006 in my small apartment in Providence, RI. With a love for printing-making, but no space, I bought a gocco and began printing note cards and personal stationery. Since then I have moved to a studio built by my fiancé, and acquired a Golding Jobber letterpress and have been printing ever since. I am so happy to have found two beautiful, simple ways to create well-made, hand-crafted goods to share.
When I am not printing, I can be found with my fiancé and pup, Simone, playing outside and traveling this way and that.
Flush Designs, Pasadena
Vendor: Invitations, Event & Floral Design, Photography
Website: Flush Designs
About Me: Flush Designs is run and owned by me, Courtney C. Keefe de Jauregui. It is all encompassing, from the custom & handmade invitations seen at my website, to full exploration in event styling and design, to flower arranging, to playing sidekick and second shooter to my husband's wedding photography. I am working on becoming a wedding "One stop shop". :) I am a graduate in fine art painting, but a self taught graphic designer. As I still needed to get my hands dirty, I started taking letterpress classes, thus becoming my new love. When I am not busy working (usually still in my pajamas) and telling myself to remember to buy a new chair (this one hurts), I am singing to my 3 cats and enjoying a cold pint with my husband at our favorite local Irish pub. Maybe it's in the reverse order. :)
I was so happy to see Yia and Sal's wedding over at Amorology. I am a huge fan of Amorology, so having taken part in a wedding that she coordinated makes me sooo happy! I had the pleasure of designing all Yia and Sal's paper products for them. They are such an awesome couple. I realized I had never posted the pics of their invitation. Oops!
I created a really simple and soft invite, with none other than my infamous swirl pattern and some fun blossoms.
I also did the menus and the little kraft paper tags for the escort/ favor boxes, and let her borrow my kraft table numbers which I am so happy about, as they turned out sooo cute! Our fantastic friend, Fontaine Su of Paloma Images took their beautiful wedding pics.

They are all custom printed and some even include the couple's monogram! See below for some examples including Nouveau Love, Foster and Bohemian Sophisticate.

“Edgy” and “wedding congratulations card” are two phrases we almost never utter in the same breath, so we were delighted — and not surprised — that Carrie and Hal of Red Cap Cards managed to pull off this combo with new collaborations with artists Naoshi (bizarre strawberry couple/cake, above!)…
